That's the plan especially since we learned that saras friend only lives 30 minutes away from knox

Well first make sure the vehicle is good and dry. I always go over my truck twice with two seperate microfiber towels to make sure ts dry. Nothing but microfiber touches my truck. Pretty much like redneckstone said, clay the vehicle first to get contaminants that washing just doesn't get. Next if you really want the paint to pop, use Meguiars Ultimate Polish to give it the wet look.

Now to the real queation at hand because it correlates with applying polish and other items as well. Again like redneck stone said, use a good synthetic wax such as Meguiar's NXT 2.0 or the new Ultimate wax. Get it in a paste form because it does last longer while a liquid is easier to apply. I have a new favorite wax though called AutoGlym. Also make sure you paint is cool to the touch and its best to apply wax in th shade or in your garage. If not you may get hazing or it will be a bitch to get wax off. It is best to apply wax thin. I usually start up top on roof, then move to driver fender and work around the truck. You apply by using small circles. You may have to look low across the surface to help you see better. Once u go all around vehicle (which should take about 20-30 minutes, let the wax sit for about ten to 15 minutes. Make sure that if you hit any trim to remove it asap; dont let it dry. Then using microfiber soft clean microfiber towel and remove wax in the same manner you applied it. Start removing where you started waxing. Once all wax is removed, I go back over it with another clean rag and then the optional step is to go over with meguiars quick detailer to help remove any wax dust.

The reason that I said it all correlates is because when hand applying anything, just apply it like wax using small circles. Make sure not to use fingertips. Try to keep bottom of your fingers flat on the pad when applying. When applying poliah or paint cleaner, you do not leave it on like wax, it comes off immediatly. I usually apply those a panel at a time and remove immediatly.

I personally just started using Mothers California Gold detailer stuff (clay bar, wax, spray, etc.) after using Meguiars for a while. We'll see how it goes, lol.

Couple of things I didn't even know that Scott mentioned. I was wondering why I had a haze on my door handles that would not come off, lol.

I know..Scott knows what he's talkin about..i just need something to do to the ranger so it feels more like mine..since i've done nothing since i've got it.(other than washing)

Use one of the large pink school erasers to remove wax from your plastic. It works like a charm!

I do pretty much like Dixie_Boysles does.
I use Meguiars Gold Class paste wax and start with the roof then get the hood followed by the drivers side fender and work my way around the truck.

I rotate my waxing pad as there's some more wax where your fingers aren't pressing down on the pad.

if you have the time you should let the buffed on wax sit on your truck for a few hours or better yet, overnight. The longer it sits on your paint before your buff it out, the longer itll last and the better itll work

When I worked in cleanup at the Ford dealer in college and a vehicle was sold and being picked up the next morning it was not uncommon for us to apply wax and leave it on all night in the wash bay and take it off the next morning. I always liked Mothers California gold carnuba wax and it came off with ease the next day. $40,000 Lincolns, black Mustangs, you name it.

After 2 months my 2011 Ranger was still as clean and shiney as it was the first day I took it home from the dealer and rubbed on a couple coats of paste wax (which I kept up and polished daily). However, wanting to do it right I went to a synthetic liquid, using the complete Turtle Wax's ICE clay bar and polish kit. After washing and drying throughly I removed everything that was on the surface of the truck with their liquid clay bar treatment. After completely finishing that step I hosed it down and was surprised to see just how stripped it really was, for the water just streamed off and would not bead anywhere.

I next used the provided ICE clay bar and lubricant, carefully cleaning the surface as instructioned, taking my time to do it right. When done I was pleased to see just how much more black the truck seemed to be. Once completely clay barred, I put on three thin coats of ICE synthetic wax, making sure each coat was dry, hardened and polished before each additional application. The effect is spectacular! I have never seen anything like it. The truck simply sparkles and gleams far beyond what I expected, even for a new truck. That evening the truck became the center of attention when parked in front of the local automotive hangout. It looked wet and mirror like, and still does a few days later (with daily dusting).

As I said, instructions on the ICE box were followed completely, parking in the shade on a day when the tempertures were below 80 degrees F, and using microfibre only for any rubbing and drying. Was the improvement from perfectly clean and shiney from before to the new ICE finish worth all the time effort and cost? Absolutely! The difference is stunning in person when seen in the sunlight with contrasting shadows. Black can be so beautiful when it is like a mirror. Here is a picture, which really does not do it justice:
