Default fixing surface rust and repainting...?

I have a 97 ranger which is in pretty good shape but has just recently begun to get some surface rust in a couple places. I probably shoulodve done a little more research on how to go about fixing rust spots before I dove right in but its a little late for that now...I chipped off the loose bubbling paint and sanded the rust off. The primer that I used is white so when I put the new paint on my truck it looks like hell because the white shows through and makes it lighter colored. Ive put a couple coats on now and it still doesnt look good. Is there something I can do to make it look nicer? Ive got some more body work to do so I am contemplating a new paint job once I'm done. I was wondering if theres a decently cheap way that I can do this myself and still have my truck look decent? thanks!!

Use grey primer.

I've been working on some rust on my truck for the past couple days. My technique is sand the until rust is completely gone using the rough stuff, 60 or 80 grit. Then use finer and finer grit until it's smooth. I took it to 800 grit. Then sprayed it with glossy black Rustoleum. This is my first attempt at body work, but it's looking pretry good. My only complaint is that it looks better than rest of the paint when you get close.

Your first mistake was using a white primer, but that's ok you can always go back and redo the bit you've already done. Use a sandable grey primer. That way you can smooth it out a little better once you've applied the primer for even better results. Plus grey primer will not bleed through and lighten the paint like the white primer does and you'll have a better finish in no time at all. White primer is basicly good for light colored vehicles such as yellow, white, silver and candy based paint jobs for making the colors pop. Basicly all white primer is to most pros is a "highlight" base used for bringing out light colored vehicles really. If you take your time and don't rush things, the paint will look great and get some really good reviews, and you'll have a since of pride knowing that you did the work yourself, which is what it's all about. Body work takes alot of time and elbow grease, but if you take that time it will definately show.
