Headlights
Has anyone here used 3M headlight restoration kit #39164 ?
If so,how well did it work ? Its supposed to be the medium grade kit.
My headlights aren't ,that bad,but they could be better.

Re: Headlights
hi pat!
i used one of the 3m headligh restore kits before, but i can't remember if it was teh exact same part number.
basically, it takes the old coat completely off and polishes the surface underneath it. comes out looking awesome. but you have to keep a coat of wax on the lenses all the time after you strip the old coating off, otherwise it will begin to cloud over on you.
have you done the toothpaste trick?

Re: Headlights
Maybe another unwanted opinion but for a ranger you can get brand new headlights with bulbs in them for less than 20 bucks a piece on E-bay. Hardly seems worth the effort to shine the old ones up. I'm lazy.

What he said. There is currently a vendor on ePay selling TYC housings for 37.99 a pair. They are good quality, I bought a pair for my HID retro. The adjusters are very good as well. Why bother trying to recondition at that price point.

Re: Headlights
I would rather get new lights. But i live on #SS,with no other Income.
The 3M kit i'm getting is only $13.00 on E-bay.
I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Re: Headlights
I have had real good luck with the Harbor Freight headlight restore kit. It has a pad for a drill which is better if your headlights need some extensive sanding. They'll put it on sale for $9.99. The 3M kit I purchased off Amazon came with only hand tools and after an half-hour I stopped and got the HF kit.

Re: Headlights
I bought aftermarket headlights and recently tried to get them adjusted up, so they would shine down the road further, the body shop I took it to said the up adjustment bolts were too short. He said he maxed them out and that is the downfall of aftermarket headlights. He said they are a little higher than they were, but if I wanted to get better range out of the headlights buy OEM.

Re: Headlights
Most of those kits work fine, 3M, Mother's, etc. it's mainly down to what's included attachment-wise.
Here's a good topping i just bought to stop them going bad again (you polish the UV protection off when cleaning)
Plastic adhering
UV Protecting
Does not yellow

Re: Headlights
I've got some rustolium clear, for plastic, somewhere in the back of my truck.
I'll try that after i clean mine again. That 3m kit didn't work that well.
My mistake was getting a 'by hand' kit.I bought a new kit with drill adapter, paper, sponge, goo, everything ,$9.50 made by 'work tech'.That should work much better.

Re: Headlights
I have done my Ranger headlight covers a couple of times. I like the Harbor Freight kit the best (go figure). The latest version is called 'deluxe' and comes with more sanding discs at (3) different grits. Did an excellent job!
