Default Dad doesn't understand clear coat

I drive an Oxford White Focus ZX3 (don't laugh, it's paid for and get better mileage and drives better than a truck) and have to park underneath a mulberry tree. I was using a clay bar to remove the purple berry and bird shit stains, and he says "Are you sure you should be doing that?"

I said the clay bar doesn't harm the paint, and actually lifts out pieces of dirt from the clear coat.

He said "Why don't you just use Soft Scrub with bleach, and a Scotchbrite pad like I do on the vans ('97 silver Dodge Caravan with 200+ K miles, '09 dark blue/gray Chrysler Town & Country)?"

The vans in question, at least the newer one, have spots where the paint is dulled and worn away.

Now, he technically owns my car. I sent my former Focus down to Florida when my brother's '96 Miata's 186K mile engine went bad, and while the Focus was there it needed a lot of work. Brother did most of it, but the rear brake lines were rusted out, so my dad junked it without asking me (it was also in his name, due to insurance and disability reasons).

I'd paid for my first Focus, $5300, 53K miles, SE trim level (cruise, PW, PL, PM, aluminum rims, fog lights, dual lighted vanity mirrors and map lights in the dome), and he said I should search for another car in Florida. I emailed several cars I'd searched that I wanted, and he ended up buying an '07 Focus ZX3 S (stands for stripper) 2.0 duratec that had been wrecked (new radiator support, air filter, left fender, left headlight, hood and of course bumper core and cover) for $4300. There was an '07 ZX3 SEL (silver, leather interior, PW, PL, PM, Audiophile steering audio controls, trunk subwoofer, power moon roof, fog lights, 2.3 duratec- pretty much every option except autotragic) for $4500- he thought it had too many options, "just more stuff to break".

So, he's forbidden me to use the clay bar on HIS car. Also forbidden me to make any modifications, although I did put a different gauge cluster in (same mileage, couple hundred less actually) and a Steeda short throw shifter (he noticed the shifter was different, I said it was a different stainless knob without the reverse lockout).

Not only is he hard hearted (what kind of guy says "It's in my name, I can junk it if I want to"?), but he's also an idiot. Softscrub has abrasives in it, and Scotchbrite definitely damages clear coat.

I love my dad, but FML.

That story is cringe worthy... I would never let him near any of my cars!

Oh and The Offical Vent Thread.

Good read.

Parents are great. Just wait till you have kids and they think you are crazy.

The kind of guy who junks a car because its in his name because he owns it is the kind of guy who junks a car that's his because he can. Man up and buy your own car.

Someday maybe you'll see he isn't as much of an idiot after all.

You should park in the garage, dad should either park under the tree and deal with berry and bird shit or he should use Uber to solve his transpo needs. Seriously, I wouldn't blame his negligence on paint maintenance due to his age, in reality its more like, he doesn't understand/really care and he's probably been like this forever. Like my neighbors (deceased) dad, every new car he got, he'd promptly rattle can the entire hood in satin black. He said it takes care of glare problems.

I was in the same situation as you only it was with boats. He would sell them on a moments notice without asking me . It made me mad enough that I finally started buying them myself just so he couldn't do that any more.

This Christmas, dad will be gone 8 years - so enjoy their antics while you still can.

The SE had a 2 liter zetec. I WOULD NOT have bought an SPI...

And I did buy my own car, the one he junked without asking me if he could. He then said I should buy my next car in Florida, where they winter. I'm 44, on SSDI (couldn't own more than 1 vehicle when I applied, or they'd deny my application, tell me I had to sell one and I also own a 1978 Dodge RV, which only has 32K miles but needs a brake master cylinder, the roof AC unit's fan rubs on the housing, step is broken on one side but still starts and runs- need to do some work on it and drive it away, see if someone want to buy it, or send it to the junkyard).

When I was looking for a car, I'd use the 'net and email him cars I was interested in. He gave me a budget of "no more than $4000"- he obviously hasn't priced used cars lately. He rejected a great many cars that were nicer than what he picked for me.

The mechanic down there said it had been wrecked in the front, radiator support, bumper, hood, right fender, air filter assembly and headlights had been replaced.

And he IS AN IDIOT! A couple weeks ago he decided he wanted to sink 8 foot 4X4's 2 feet deep in cement and use chicken wire for an enclosure for leaves. Decided that the ice auger I'd bought last summer, and was in the corner of the barn was his, and must have been a post hole digger.

He came up to where I was helping my mother in the flower bed and said "I need you to come back here for something." and "I need your strong back". Not "Would you mind helping me for a little on a project?".

So I walk back, and there's my ice auger. Blades were ripped off and the handle was broken at the hinge. He says "This is terrible! Not worth a shit, I tried to bore a hole, hit some rocks and the blades ripped out and the handle broke."

I said "Dad, that's an ice auger. Not made for going through dirt and rocks, the handle folds so you can carry it out on the ice. The blades are replaceable, which is why they ripped out."

He just shrugged and gave me an old cast iron auger with a piece of lead pipe (truly lead- cast iron auger and lead pipe were here when they bought the place). Says "I want this 2 feet deep. Get to work." And walks into the house to sit in the AC and drink iced tea in the air conditioning.

Comes out after an hour, and the hole is maybe a foot. I hit rock (limestone bedrock is less than 2 feet under the dirt level, and there are a lot of broken rocks above it) just about every time I turned the auger. And since it was cast iron with a 4 foot lead pipe to turn it (must have weighed close to 100 lbs.) I have to tear up my shoulders to try and lift it, too high to get under it and press it and not low enough to use my biceps and curl it.

Says "What the hell have you been doing out here?! I would have thought you'd have had a couple holes finished, at least one and started on the next one..."

I said there were rocks and the tool was wrong for the job (too heavy and had the wrong kind of handle- an auger would work but you'd need to be able to keep it moving rather than turn it 180 degrees at a time, that a post hole digger with handles you drop into the hole and pull the handles out to grab the dirt and lift it out was what he needed). He shrugged and said "Do the best you can." and walked back inside for more iced tea.

After working until 4 in the afternoon in 90+ degree heat and humidity I had gotten down to solid rock on 2 holes. He came out and measured, they were 14 and 16 inches each, and said "I'd rather them have been 2 feet, but if you don't think you can get through the bedrock then I guess it'll do."

So he gets out a bag of quickcrete that has gotten wet and is a solid chunk, tells me to break it up mix it and "see what I can do".

I broke it up and mixed it, and it ended up having its own aggregate in it. Used some of the rocks I had unearthed digging the holes to shore up the posts (he actually wanted them plumb, for a chicken wire leaf enclosure) and a half a bag of quickcrete per hole.

That was 2 weeks ago, and he tried to dig another hole the next day. Hit some cinder block foundation on the bedrock and quit. Left the tools out there for another week, got rained on twice before he brought them in. Decided "Maybe I was trying to be too adventurous with the leaf enclosure design. Probably don't need 8 foot pressure treated 4X4's set 22 feet deep with chicken wire to hold leaves."

You're right, there are a lot of questionable things in that post. But something tells me you don't see them.

I see a pretty big one. Even though there is a possible explanation for it, it sticks out pretty good.

So... What's this got to do with cleaning and detailing?

Edit: Got caught up on the post hole digging story, the detailing story is awful too. I feel for ya
