Like my neighbors (deceased) dad, every new car he got, he'd promptly rattle can the entire hood in satin black. He said it takes care of glare problems.

There is no garage. There are 4 places,3 of which are directly under a big old mulberry tree. My dad wants to cut it back or even down, but my mom won't let him. She says "The birds eat the berries. If you cut it down what will they eat?"- like the birds would suddenly starve to death without it.
Funny you should mention the flat black hoods, my dad said that was something people (racers usually) used to do back in the 50's and 60's. In fact, if you look at the original Boss 302 Mustang, the hoods were matte black.
He also talked about doing that on his Fruck (1990 Ranger XLT 4.0 V6 with 180+K miles- the paint on the hood and roof was wearing off when he got it, my brother and I said he should get Ford Duplicolor silver paint and paint the metal. He didn't, and when the bare metal started to "patina" he complained about how bad it looked. Had a smoked plastic bug deflector on the hood and a black topper, and he thought it would look good if the hood and roof were black- black from the bug deflector back).
