hi everyone im new here and have a question on fuel economy , my 09 ranger 4x4 sport is only getting a little over 300 k per tank while my buddy at work is getting 500 per tank , my driving is mostly city so what gives ????

Throttle control will help you a lot. Not to mention, do you even have the same engines, 2WD or 4WD? Also how many miles does each of your trucks have? What years?

Too many variables to give a justifiable answer. For starters why not trying to give your truck a tune up? Sea foam the engine. New plugs and wires. Clean the MAF and PCV.

Make sure it's in overdrive. It's said that you get better fuel economy with overdrive. If you don't know, turn the vehicle on and push the button/end of the gear shifter inward (with automatic trans). You should see "O/D" light up on your dash, or is it "O/D off". Either way, it'll tell you whether it's on or off. You want it to be on, and stay on.

od ON is already automatic, touching the button will turn it off

we both have the same trucks only difference is i have a cai and slightly larger tires , i just did a 100 k and filled the tank till the first shut off and it took 20 liters, thats a far cry from 14 lit per 100 k

I am in the process of seeing how many km I am getting to a tank of fuel. I have the air box mod done, and 265 75 16 tires. Before the tires I was getting 5 or more a tank of easy driving. I have heard some people getting worse mpg off of a cold air intake, among many reasons one being wanting to hear the sound to much. They can make your truck better on gas or way worse if you are putting your foot in it.

why did you waste your money on a CAI?

Are you Gus putting the same amount of fuel in your trucks? I know I had an 09 and it would barely get over 400km a tank and my 2011 for close to 550 (650 of you fill the spout)

My '10 4x4 sport with 3.73 gears will get close to 450 in the winter. In the summer I can 550 (600) if I fill the spout. And that is being "old man" driving habits. I also have done exhaust and super chip. I put the stock air box back with paper filter. I found it was better

Are those the stock gears or did you change them

My 2004 ranger with 313000 kms gets 600kms easy. 3.0L v6, 5 speed. I shift early to save fuel and also cuz it has enough torque. 3rd at 30km, 4th at 40km, 5th at 55km.

I'm very new to the forum and new to Rangers and trucks in general. I just purchased a 1995 4.0L 4x4 to use as a winter beater and I just went through my first full tank of fuel and I'm getting terrible gas mileage as well. I only got 300km with 67 liters of fuel. Everything is stock in my truck to my knowledge. I know that the truck needs some TLC, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could start in terms of maintenance in order to try and get some better fuel economy?

huh... something internal needs a cleaning or replacement. im 5.5" lift on 33's with 4.56 gears, and i get 480 per tank in the summer around town. highway im easily pushing 600 to a tank.

Well I think once the snow thaws I will start with new fluids all around, then I was thinking of taking out the throttle body and giving it a good clean. I took the air filter out and gave it a good cleaning a few weeks ago, it was so dirty (I have th factory K&N cone).

I bought a new fuel filter and fuel pump because I have been having some startup issues, seems to require a couple cycles of the key to start. I wonder if that might have a little to do with the fuel economy? I put in a bottle of fuel system cleaner last fill up and it seems to have improved the startup issues a little.
