If you have downstream o2 sensors, youll need to get an emulator that plugs into the sensor harness where the downstream sensor would be in order to delete the cats

----------

Otherwise youll be throwing codes like crazy, and your truck will run like shit

6 O2 censors. 3 cats. One up stream on downstream on each.

The number of o2 sensors depends on the configuration of the exhaust system. You can cut off your cat as long as you leave the upstream o2 sensors in place. The upstream sensors are for fuel controls the downstream are for cat efficiency checks. If you cut off the cats and leave all sensors in place then it should run OK, but the check engine
light will be on. Downstream sensors don't affect driveability.

Doesn it trigger any variation a/f or even limp mode tho?

The o2 sensors located between the engine and the cat monitor the air/fuel mixture coming down the exhaust system. Based on what it reads, whether rich or lean, it tells the PCM what is happening and then the PCM adjust the short term fuel trim to compensate.

Think about the o2 sensors like your little sister and the PCM like your mother and you are the engine. The little sister always tattle tales on the engine, telling the mom what it is doing and then the mom makes corrections.

This is how the o2 sensors are designed to operate. As the engine runs and creates exhaust, the o2 sensors monitor the exhaust, when it is getting rich, it tells the PCM that it is too rich and then the PCM will adjust the fuel trim back, when the o2 sensor then sees that it is running lean, it tells the PCM and it adjust the fuel trim to bring back more fuel.

Because of this the o2 sensors are constantly going from rich to lean to rich to lean and constantly switch back and forth to keep the air fuel mixture correct.

The o2 sensors behind the cat are simply for catalyst efficiency. The PCM looks for certain parameters for what the downstream sensors are reading, because if the cat is working correctly it should see a certain reading. If it doesn't see that desired reading, then it will set a code for cat efficiency below threshold.

This is why you can remove the cat and leave the sensors in place and the truck should run OK, but the check engine light will remain on.

That being said, aftermarket cats that you can install into the system yourself have become fairly inexpensive and then you don't have to worry about emissions, check engine lights or anything else.

Im more familiar with import tunning, but with cobb and hondata software ive seen you can turn the code off... Anyway you could do that with like a diablo tuner on fords?

Ummm... not what I have learned in training, 14 years experience, and stories/first hand accounts...

The upstream and downstream o2 sensors on these trucks work in concert, reading mixtures and using it for parameters on efficiency. Yes you are correct on the upstreams being used to regulate and adjust for air fuel mixtures, but it also sets up for the readings taken by the downstream o2 sensor. If you flat out removed the cats, and left just the sensors in with a straight pipe configuration, your downstream will see the lack of change in the gasses coming to it as a faulty cat, and throw a code. Now that the dowmstream o2 sensor is not reading right, the PCM is still getting readings from the upstream, but because the downstream sensor, the PCM will radically adjust the air fuel mixture to try and get the readings back to what is set from the factory. Removing the cat on a vehicle with dual sensors will cause at best a drop in fuel economy, rich running engine causing that, to the other end of the scale where it runs too lean, and you destroy your motor. Again, ive seen this occur on a few occasions from my time working as an exhaust tech at a sherwood park muffler shop.

Two ways to avoid these issues for those with the dual sensor setups wanting to delete cats:

First is the emulator I mentioned earlier. You can buy them at performance shops and I believe they are still offered on ebay,

Second is an aftermarket PCM performance tuning kit. Some of these plug and play kits offer the option to disable the secondary sensors. Once disabled, they will program the PCM with new parameters to be met by a single sensor, thus cutting out the confusion from the second sensor, and allowing the exhaust to flow better without the cat restriction.

Why are you wanting to remove the Cats anyway? What is the year and engine size of your truck?

Probably plugged... Adam ran into the same issue with his ranger, each bank has a cat, and there is a third cat at the intersection of the pipes... apparently the cats are stupidly expensive, and a universal aftermarket wont work on these trucks...
