You are correct Brodie!
In Canada ONLY these areas require front and rear plates:
British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan

I think the only province that doesnt have front plates is quebec, other then its pretty much an obligation. the cop may let you off with a warning and ask you to present yourself at the station with the front plate installed but some will just give you the fine. its at your own discretion.

at the very least you have to mount the plate that has the validation sticker on it and in ontario that is the front plate.

I'm willing to bet that Canada is like the U.S. Not only does the province or state that requires front and rear plates to be displayed, the police require the plates be on the bumper in plain sight. I don't know why some cars do not have holes pre-drilled on the front bumper for plates because the factory in essence would have to make two different parts -- one bumper for states and provinces requiring a front plate and one w/o holes for the states/provinces that only require a rear plate. Regardless, I know it draws police suspicion when no front plate is properly displayed. It looks ghetto to have it in the window, and it can reasonably be argued that it isn't in plain site. Some owners feel it is actually better not to have a plate displayed at all, but again you are at risk of a ticket. I am not a huge fan of needing both front and rear plates, and Ohio is actually considering getting rid of them since not all states require both front and back. I find it odd that Ontario requires the validation sticker on the front plate since a cop pullls one over from the rear. We have our validation sticker on the rear plate lower right corner. Our old plates used to require a county sticker as well on both front and rear (on the left lower corner).

Minnesota cops are cracking down on people who do not have a front plate. the fine $150. and the cop takes a pic of the car, then if the car is stopped again, without a plate on the front, the car is impounded.

That is on the strict side. I personally hate having both front and back plates. Ohio in a cost cutting measure is thinking about forgoing with the front one, but I know the cops probably dislike the idea. For obvious reasons, it is probably easier to spot a stolen car, for instance, when you can look at the front plate while passing vs. having to look or turn the vehicle around when only the rear plate is present.

Actually on all passenger vehicles, including SUV's (blue plates) the sticker is on the rear. Light Trucks and Commercial vehicles (black plated) all have the sticker on the front along with the sticker denoting whether the vehicle is commercial or personal use. I agree though it's pretty dumb, someone told me once it was so the sticker isn't obscured when you're towing. But I think it's pretty darn well obscured by the vehicle itself when you stick it on the front bumper.

Nova Scotia does not require the front plate. Only the back one.

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act says mounted on the _front_ of the vehicle, hence although it is probably visible in the window, you'll have no defence to a ticket - your windshield is 1/3rd the way along your vehicle, Rumors are that the police get pissed off when they can't focus their speed laser on your front (reflective) plate...

I drive by a fishing hole every Mon-Fri. They're there 4 times out of 5.
