Default Replacing The Radio

1998 Ford Ranger XLT:

I'm planning to replace my radio because the display does not work. It plays good, but the lack of a display kind of sucks. The radio that I will be replacing is the factory radio with CD player, cassette player, and some DJ display. I don't have the audio book on me right now, but it was the fanciest radio that the factory was installing in 1998.

I'm looking for a tutorial for this project because I don't have the money to throw at sound technician.

I'm think I might know somebody that has a few radios lying around, but if I'm wrong about that, I'm looking for suggestions for a replacement radio.

- The only thing I need is a AM/FM radio with digital tuning.
- I have no use for a CD and/or cassette player.
- It doesn't have to look original, and it doesn't even have to match up with the factory bezel. I can take of that later.
- I don't want to spend a lot money.

I was in the same boat with my work truck as well. Those radios were known for the display burning out.

Replaced it with one like this that I found for $40 on Ebay. Only complaint is the rear speakers don't work with it.

This one was called a "RDS" (radio data system) display and what was neat was it would show the title/artist of the particular song playing, or what the station was in general. Only flaw of these radios was the displays generated a lot of heat and the solder joints in the circuit board would eventually fail blanking out the display.

There is a DIY fix for it, haven't attempted it myself.

DJ is the Ford term for a cd changer. Some of those 98+ bare bone radios have no fader adjustment, I got one from a Crown Vic so it did have fader.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been busy, lately.

Thanks bodkin1, the RDS display is what I was thinking of.

GLH, how much do you want for it? Is the CD changer built into the radio or is it external? Send me a PM with the details.

I found a cheap AM/FM tuner. I just got it, today. It plays, the display works, and the wiring harness didn't even burn up.

It went... well.
