1994 Ranger radio wiring adaptor to JVC
Hey all. I"ve got a '94 Ranger with the premium radio system. I also have a JVC cd radio/stereo Model KD-S550 that I want to replace the factory one with. Problem is the connections do not match up. Any body know if there is an adaptor out there that I can use to mate these two ?

The 1994 Ranger manual classified the radio as the "Premium" radio system. I did notice checking online that that years ranger had 2 radio/stereo models: regular system and the premium system. The wire connections and wiring colors were different between the two.

Jeff,
The easy thing to do is pull your stock unit and take a picture of the connector. With that, someone here or your local audio shop can hook you up with the correct harness the first time.

All you need to do is call or chat with Crutchfield and get the correct adaptor.

I bought mine at Walmart...and I have the premium sound system. Just take your stock stereo in and match up the connector

the package that the adaptors in will tell you if it will work or not. They're at walmart for like $8 if that.

Yeah, but the problem is the package throws you off. I believe he needs one for a mustang, iirc. I tried the adaptor for a ranger and its wasn't even close, but with the premium sound system, like in mustangs, the mustang adaptor works

Re: 1994 Ranger radio wiring adaptor to JVC
Dude. Since the wiring in your truck is so old anyway, you are entirely better off by just leaving your stock wiring in place (unplugged) and run new power, ground, remote turn on, and speaker wiring from your new headunit to the battery, fusebox, chassis, and speakers.
Yes, if you have a factory amplifier on board, you want to bypass the stock system. The JVC is more powerful and has better EQ/sound shaping options.
Do not trust 20 year old wiring !

Thats entirely too much work to run all that unneeded wiring when wiring is already in place. if he has the same system i do, he has a factory pre amp behind the pass side kick panel, and with the correct stereo adaptor, the preamp will be wired to his new head unit. everything is already there, so "if it aint broke, dont fix it"
just my 2 cents

Re: 1994 Ranger radio wiring adaptor to JVC
It's not much work to it at all and the factory amp is a POS and not even as powerful as the built-in amp of the JVC headunit and if he also installs some good aftermarket speakers, his sound will be better than ever. Wiring deteriorates over time and it is recommended to replace wiring over 10 years old when installing new audio. He can have a decent sounding basic system if he takes the right advice.
