Default my "over the top" Rockford Fosgate build, PICS!!!

Hello all, This is my second post here. My first post was a billet grill install on my friends 99 ranger extended cab. Since that last post my friend has had a few D.U.I.'s and decided to sell the truck to me. I got it for a good price and its in GREAT condition with just over 100,xxx miles, i just couldn't pass up the offer. I bought the truck with a kenwood mp3 player and upgraded pioneer 2way 4x6's. It sounds okay but its not good enough for me as i spend a lot of time driving. This is a work in progress, and i plan to upgrade the head unit to a double din dvd/NAV unit and also custom fiberglass door panels for 6.5" components (fosgate punch pro) up front. So this is whats going in so far (as soon as i install my alarm system).

4- fosgate punch pro PPS4-8, 8" midbass

2- fosgate punch pro PP4-T, 1.5" tweeter's

2- fosgate punch pro PP4-X, 3-way passive crossover's

1- fosgate punch 500X, 4-channel midbass amp

1- fosgate punch X1000.1, mono subwoofer amp

1- fosgate punch amp LINK

1- fosgate punch LINK meter (voltage meter)

1- fosgate punch remote bass knob

2- Memphis MOJO 10" sub woofers

1- AudioControl EPIC-150 in-dash epicenter/DB meter (pure awesome)

Okay, so I went with a pre-fab 10"sub box to build off of. The sub box is heavy duty 3/4" MDF made by Obcon. I used 1/2" plywood to build the enclosures for the midbass. I just used a simple jigsaw to make all my cuts, I wasn't worried about the cuts as carpet and bondo or Spackle will hide all my ugly cuts.

not a bad carpet cut if i do say so myself

Thats it for now, how is it looking? I will be back soon to finish my post, im on my way to get some polyfill for the mid box.

Gonna sound good from the looks of what you are going to be running.

Are you doing any electrical upgrades to keep up with all that? sorry if you answered that already.

I wasnt to keen on useing plywood either but its what i had on hand. Im planning on useing about 2 ounces of polyfill per side plus i am going to use undercoating and coat the inside of each encloser. That should help. I think it turned out decent for only spending $20 for a roll of carpet and a can of spray glue from autozone. everything other then that i had on hand.

Glad you ask! I plan on doing the big 3 upgrades with 0/1 gage wire and also planning on installing a second kinetic battery in the bed. Tomorrow i will be installing the 4 gage and 10 gage power and ground as well as new monster cable signal cables. Cant forget about the remote wires too, i will be running them tomorrow too. The only piece missing in this system is a power and ground distribution block, i guess its time to get one orderd because my install is going faster then i expected.
I am hung up on my alarm thou, for some reason i can rebuild a transmission but i cant seem to get this alarm installed (basic crime stopper alarm). Thinking i mite have to pay to have it installed (i cring at the idea of paying to have work done to my ride).

So, all the sound is behind you ? Are the tweeters being powered by the headunit ? Any speakers in front ?

Rite now the tweeters are powered off of the head unit. However once the system is installed they will be running off of the 4channel amp as part of the componant set. They will be ran with the PPX-4 crossovers, these crossovers are top notch they have one input, one tweeter out, and two mid woofer outputs and can be switched to either 4 or 8 Ohms and also it has a 3 position tweeter muteing. The only downfall with the crossovers is the price, $100 each.

I plan to buy another componant set identical to this only in the 6, 1/2" insted of the 8" for the front, but for now i will just be running pioneer 4x6's in the front doors and they will be ran of the front ouput of the 4channel amp.

Just for a test i connected the front 4x6"s and the rear tweeters to the head unit, i did this without the external crossover because these tweeters have a built in crossover and OMG! These things are sooooo loud they hurt my ears! You guys should do your reaserch on these tweeters they are built tough, they have a magnet/motor bigger then any 6x9 i have ever seen.

Okay, So I thought I would update everyone on my progress...

I ended up paying for a new alarm and installation. Not bad, I payed just under $200 for a viper with install. It has all the bells and whistles so im pretty happy. It also has remote start upgrade that i can do and i plan on adding that soon.

So, now that i have my alarm installed I went forward with the sound system and got that all put in and tuned. first I installed the punch remote bass control knob in the radio trim bezel. I think it turned out good, its in a good location for easy access for adjustments depending on the type of music im listening too. give me your input, what do you guys think?

Here's a few pics of the box installed and all hooked up. Although, I am not too happy with this set up now that i listened to it. I think i mite design a new box. Dont get me wrong... its incredibly and ridiculously loud and sounds crystal clear all the way up to max volume. I just think it would be louder with all 4 of the 8" midbass speakers facing straight up instead of just two of them facing up. what about you? what do you think?

Sorry for the picture quality, it was super sunny out and pics were taken from my cell phone.

So i connected just the midbass and left the subs disconnected for testing (wanted to see how loud they would get without the help of the subs) and playing country music i was able to hit 134 D/B's with just the mids. These things sound amazing!!! they have a lot of punch (lol) to them and you almost dont even need subs!

Sad to say though that when i connected the fosgate 1000.1 and tested the subs the amp failed after about an hour of play time at half volume. Just started popping fuses all the way up to 100amp's.
I thought it mite have been my mistake on wiring these subs but after double checking I indeed had everything connected rite. FYI, these subs are duel 2,OHMS and the amp is stable at 2,OHMS. They are wired up in series and back down to 2,OHMS in parallel (if i remember rite). I tested it with the multi meter and sure enough im rite at 2.3 OHMS.

So whats a boy to do now? i have a blown fosgate 1000.1 mono amp? Should i go buy a new amp from ebay or try to find one at a local pawn shop? (ya rite, not this model)...

As luck would have it i personally know the best rockford fosgate repair guy in the world and he lives about 20 miles away from me. So yesterday i rolled up to his house and dropped off my amp to him along with a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 1200.1 that has no output signal. Hes going to repair the fosgate for free since i purchased it from him and hes only charging me parts to fix the Tantrum amp. Not bad huh guys. This guy is the SHIT!!! In his shop you cant even see paint on the walls, he has fosgate and hifonics amps from floor to ceiling and even screwed to his ceiling!!! he pretty much has any fosgate amp ever made at ridiculous prices (cuz im his bud!) and If i ever break it,.... he will fix it!!!

On another note I brought my new toy up to his house (he lives in the sticks) my new FNP-45, .45 acp pistol. Best gun i have ever owned. If you guys play video games, this is the gun from black ops 2, its called the TAC 45 in the game. this pistol holds 15 rounds of .45acp!! no other .45 in the world has that capacity!!! it shoots like a dream and my left handed son even enjoyed it as its ambidextrous. If yall are into the 2nd amendment I highly recommend purchasing this pistol. Its also great for theft deterrent lol.

So thats it! I mite do a youtube video next week when i get the amp back and installed. was thinking of doing a distance test on how far away you can clearly hear the vocals. Should be good, and i will post it here when i do. These mids (punch pro's) are new and i have not seen too many reviews on then. one guys on the web said they sound like crap at high volumes. I challenge that guy to come and listen to my rig. These mids are the BEST out there. Unless you plan on spending thousands on rainbow's or something you can get no better then these. Please though, if you plann on buying yourself a set up like this, do it through ebay. The MSRP on the 8's are around $150 each, ebay has them for $60 bucks new and shipped.

Let me know how it looks, anything you would do different? How did the home-made box turn out? (i undercoated the inside and installed 2 oz of polly fill per chamber) Im thinking of selling this setup soon to purchase a pair of dirt bikes for my kiddos. anyone interested? everything would be included, including the audiocontrol EPIC-150 and 2 pair of pioneer 4x6, 2 way door speakers. All wires and connectors and RCA's would go with it too. Will not ship, sorry

I would have the 8" in the front for midbass and used the 6.5" for rear fill. I duno how many concerts you've been to but all the ones Ive been to I faced, Didnt stand backwards to the sound.

And large magnets depending on the grade of quality and manufactures specs are for control over the voice coil. Even when RF first came out, they had ridiculous magnet structures for there 3.5" making them almost bottom loadable only in many Chevy installs... NOW I just dated myself [SMH]

The 6.5" will fit in the front doors and he needs mids and highs in the front, not only midbass. He needs all the mids and highs in the front and all the bass in the rear.

The 8" could fit in the doors as well and just out of curioucity; Whats your idea of a soundstage or imaging charcteristics?

To term Midrange or Midbass and percieve that they are determined or limited by speaker size is a bit naive dont you think? Or is your thought the same concept as sitting in the middle of the entourage of speakers as if you were between a large set of headphones?

X-over would indicate type of speaker by frequency NOT size, Size of speaker would be indictive to volume. You want "LOUDER" you need to increase frequency/Speaker cone surface area.

My suggestion would be to X-over the 8" AS midrange drivers for front stage and put the smaller drivers in the rear for rear fill but still adding to the volume.

I understood the intent, my comment was more of a corrective tone and thinking without seeming rude. Might be hard to understand that, but I am telling you based upon experience and sound Q.

Again it was just a suggestion in favor of better and more correct sound.

That my friend is a audiocontrol EPIC-150. This is the older model and currently the sell the EPIC-160. The 160 can reach 160 D/B's on the meter rather then the 150 maxing out at 150. This not only is a meter but also a EPICENTER and dramaticly effects the bass for super bass!! my local shop sells them for about $300 but ebay is about $150. its totally worth the money.
