Question Stock Radio Display Problems?

Ok, here's the deal. I have a 2000 Ranger. When I purchased the truck the display worked. The truck sat for a couple months, Then I noticed the display not working. I then decided to take the unit out and see if any wires were damaged. As I was removing it, The display suddenly worked so I re installed it. I just got 2 10in subs and amp..etc.. I did use a converter but didn't do anything to the display wires. Now it isn't working. I did some research and found it's usually the solders so I un soldered and re soldered everything I could see. Still nothing. Everything works besides the display. Does this limit it to wiring or a light for the display? The product number is xl5f-18c815-aa. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do yourself a huge favor and replace that stock headunit with a modern aftermarket headunit with filters and sub control.

I would agree with changing the radio as it will add significant performance benefits but if you want to keep the factory appearance then you might be able to repair it. The problem is going to be at the display on this radio. You may even be able to see the burn mark if you look at it carefully. When you say you've been soldering things are you talking about inside the radio? For me it isn't worth the time to hunt down the problem as I believe it will just come back. If you want to keep the factory look you may also consider this;

I've used these guys several times and they are always reasonable and have great service.

Holy shit...really?!

If he pays that price for a stock POS head unit...I'll find him, and kick him in the nuts.

You can get stocks at junkyards CHEAP. But for less than the price of a stock one from that site you can get a decent aftermarket deck.

Help me out GLH

www.sonicelectronix.com. Soldering wears out, and I experienced that issue with the wife's Ford Edge when the display went out.

Be careful to buy from an authorized dealer of whatever brand you get. Warranty and customer service rule !

Yes you can buy from a junk yard for less... a lot less, but you never know what you'll get that way. Could have the same problem in a week. At least this way you get some kind of warranty and I've even purchased a couple units from these guys that turned out to be new with the original plastic still on them. Believe me, I'd much rather upgrade to an aftermarket radio, but if someone wants to keep a factory appearance this is a good option. Like mentioned earlier... "warranty and customer service rule!"

That applies to almost anything that can be purchased -- especially online when it is hard to verify identity of companies and their quality.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It seems to be very bipolar on when it wants to work.. sometimes it works when I start it up, sometimes it doesn't.. It doesn't make any sense. I'll probably deal with it for a while. I really don't want an aftermarket HU because in my opinion they look awkward and cheap. I know there are some nice ones out there but I don't care to spend that much money on it. Thanks again!

FWIW, we had a similar problem on our '01 Ford/Lincoln radio. The problem turned out to be the well known issue of broken solder joints. Fix is to reflow those solder joints with a solder iron. I found it kinda tricky to get the (1/2" thick) display section off the front of the radio, but I did it. It works fine now.

Google for it. Here's a sample post about it:
