Default 2001 Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4 radio/cd

Hi. I'm new here but love to lurk in forums that interest me. Anyway, my Ranger has the factory 6disk CD/am/fm radio with stock speakers. Well, probably stock speakers, it was a salvage rebuild with a couple doors replaced. When the shop told me what all he had done, new speakers were not mentioned.
As everyone knows, this 6 disk unit is a POS. Ok, at least everyone I have asked about it agrees it's POS. Radio works fine, CD changer won't eject disks properly as in press eject and nothing happens. 2 days later, I come out to the truck and a CD is hanging out of the slot. When it takes the CD correctly, it plays fine.
I live on the near edge of nowhere in the Rocky Mountains outside of Colorado Springs and we have no radio reception. Ok, neither of the 2 stations that rarely are audible are my kind of music. One's not music and the other is not English. I had an XM unit installed buy family finances have caused us to cut back the 'luxuries' of life.
I am not looking to change speakers or drastically improve sound over stock unit. In my old age, I now wear hearing aids and yes, they make music much more enjoyable again, but an expensive upgrade isn't worth the expense. The tires and roads I routinely drive are not quiet, so sound quality is decreased anyway.
Are there any in-dash changers still made? I've been looking and I am not finding any. I'd take a used one if it worked properly. I am not ready to go to a separate CD changer, I'd rather have a single disk indash. 10 years ago, the last time I was audio shopping, the 6-disk units were new and expensive. Now, I can't find any. The in-dash changer in my 2003 Subaru Forester works great.
If there is a unit from a different car/truck that can be made to fit without to much destruction, I can put one in myself. Otherwise, it would have to go to a shop which is not that big a deal. Any suggestions? OH, if road or off-road conditions make the CD skip, it's probably too noisy to hear the music anyway.

Thanks in advance,
Red

I was never a fan of multi disc changers in cars. If youdon't mind only having a single disc you can get any other Ranger single disc unit and swap it in. All plug in play. Anything from 94+ would swap in IIRC.

I cant really tell what you want by your post, In dash 6 or single???? If your looking for a stock in dash 6 I can tell you I have one in my 05 and have never had any problems with it. Maybe mine is rare but I have actually been surprised at how well it performs and holds a song even on rough roads. Check this link http://www.oem-auto-accessory.com/fa...rd_radios.html some of them are pricey but maybe you can find a deal.

Default what I want in a radio....

Don't feel bad, sometimes I even confuse myself. I remember watching an episode of 'The Osbornes' and Ozzy was mumbling to himself. all of a sudden he clearly says "what the **** am I talking about?" My hero.

preference is for the 6disk indash AM/FM/CD
a single disk AM/FM/CD is acceptable.

l checked that OEM radio website and the prices are a bit pricey but if it is an easy swap, p rice may be worth it.

also checking Ebay.

It also just now occurred to me I should call some of the install places and see if they have one. Not quite sure of getting one from a salvage yard, it's more of a last resort.

Thanks for the tips. Like I said, I love forums. Best place for info I have ever found.

i'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but i had the same problem with my factory 6 disc cd changer. So i went to best buy and bought this. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+50...ustomerreviews
it's a single disc, AUX hook up, cd player, radio. You can take off the faceplate if you really want to. It was very easy to put in if you know what you are doing. It comes with a remote. The list price is 79 but if you wait a little bit it might go back to 69. And when i was there i bought the wiring harness and insert plate thingy and the 4 year warrenty, (plus the movie "The Hangover') and my total was 153.67. If i had to do it over again, i'd buy the harness and insert plate from walmart because they were both 20 bucks at best buy. kinda a rip off, but oh well. live and learn i guess.
But this radio will fit in your truck, and it will work and sound nice. i've had it in since mid december and i have zero complaints. and for less then 150 bucks, it's a nice radio.
