Default Extended Cab Box Plan(s)

sup /audio & video

So I'm looking to upgrade my system. I want a box similar to this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-RANGER-...97cc9c&vxp=mtr

...but the people of caraudio.com say that this isn't the best box. So i'm looking for box plans that are similar to this one. I really like the down firing idea, and I think I could rock it. They were saying something about airspace. I will admit, this is one thing I'm not properly educated on in the car audio department. My buddy who is fairly good at building things already made blue prints for that box ^ up there. Does anyone else have experience with these type of boxes? If so, what were your blue prints/plans?

Sub wise, I came across 2 good deals. My choices are either 2 12'' CVX's for $100, or a single 12'' Kicker l5 Solo Baric for $100. I have an MTX 600xd mono amp which puts out 300 rms @ 4ohms & 600 rms @ 2ohms (1200 max). I'm almost 100% the CVX's are dual 2ohm and the L5 is dual 4 ohm, making it so I could use the amp's full potential. Which would be the best for this box? Or if none, what improvements can be made to make the box have more airspace?

I know it's a lot of questions, but the people at caraudio just kinda left me hanging, and they don't know what us Ranger owners go through for out boxes ;D

I built a box and put 4 10's in it. I loved it. It sounded great and I still had the function of the ext cab. Like I could put my tools back there, or the dog, whatever. It was like a raised floor!

That's exactly what I'm looking for! I think I saw a video of yours on youtube actually haha it sounded nice! 4 for me would be overkill, but do you have the general box plans/measurments for that box? You still have that bad boy in the back?

It was like 51" side to side. The top was like 18" from the wall to the seat. I just put the seat where I could drive the truck. Then made my measurements to fit in the space and matched the seat angle.

I dont have it, I sold it to a kid for $500 with the amp.....lolz

And I dont have the truck anymore, with 2 kids, my jamming days are done...................

I had to remove the jump seats in the back and, had to remove the front seats to get the box in the truck

That thing is a monster. Was that box ported? And what set up do you think would sound best?

No it was sealed. I really took my time and built it well. Biscuit jointed all the pieces, recessed the screws and glued it. I also divided the center on the inside so there was 2 speakers per side. Then siliconed all the seams.

Im outta the loop on CA nowadays, but if I were to do it again I would get the square kickers, I think they would fit better.

I wasnt going for ground shaking bass tho, So the 10's in a sealed box gave me a good punch bass for the AC/DC music I like.

Gotcha. I'm not looking to rush into this. Definitely want to do it right. How much power did you have going into those?

I had an 1800 kenwood class D amp and was 1ohm stable, think it was the 9103-d. the subs where kicker cvr DVC 2ohm and could handle 450ea. So, on paper, I was able to push them to the max. In reality, I had a 1.03 ohm load on the amp from the speakers.

The 9103D and 9105D (newer model) amps are in fact 1 ohm stable, but they are regulated to only 900 watts RMS @ 1 ohm, same as they are rated @ 2 ohms. So each 400 watts RMS rated sub was actually getting around 225 watts RMS each, at amp maximum output voltage.

So I made my decision. I'm gonna go with a 12'' Kicker L5, and stick with that same basic box design, but just build it for 1 square 12. I'm fairly confident that this will be enough airspace for 1 sub, but let me know what you think.

Also, is the port on top going to be okay? Is it just a mattter of cutting 2 rectangular holes on top? box noob here. Thanks /audio

If you have never built a ported subwoofer enclosure, I doubt you should. No, the port is the most technical part of the enclosure and what 'tunes' the box to the subwoofer. Also, Kicker subs are really most suited for sealed enclosures. Every subwoofer has specific parameters and enclosure spcifications.

+1 on not doing a ported box if it's your first build.

While there are calculators & tools online to help with the design, I definitely wouldn't recommend it for a first timer unless you have several years of woodworking skills under your belt.

Heck, I've got over 30+ years of woodworking & I still don't like building ported boxes.

I've got an original 15" kicker solobaric round sub... way back when the solobaric's were first round... and it's in a sealed box that's only about 1.5cu ft. It's a monster that is not fun to move around, but I've yet to find an amp that will push it to it's limits.

With a single 12" L3, L5 or L7 or even 2 10" L subs, you can probably make a shorter box (side to side) that will eliminate the need to remove the rear seats & still have a lot of good storage on top/behind the box.

While bottom mounted subs are nice... as the cones won't collect dirt, remember that you'll probably have to mount them in the box BEFORE you install the box in the truck. With the weight of a sheet of 3/4" mdf or particle board plus the sub(s) you're gonna need some help wrestling that sucker in the truck... and probably need to remove at least one seat to get it in there

Building a sealed box should be a lot easier

If you use mdf or particle board, make sure you pre-drill & countersink all the screws to keep the material from splitting apart & use plenty of good wood glue on all the joints. Once it's all dried, I'd even use some good 100% silicone caulk around all the joints inside just to give it a belt & suspenders insurance there aren't any leaks.

Oh yeah that was my other question! What wood do you reccomend I get? My friend might already know, but I'd like to get your opinion first ;D
