Default Replacing factory AM/FM radio to Pioneer 6 Disc

Hey guys, found a sweet local deal on a factory Ranger pioneer head unit with the 6 disc cd changer in it. Getting rid of the factory am/fm radio in my truck is looking tempting...

I know that the 98+ units will swap no problem, but I've also read that this requires an external amp, and going from normal to "premium" has had some complications since Ford was a little complicated with their radio stuff. Will this require any mods? I was hoping for just plug and play, as this is only a bonus for me and I don't really have time for doing a wiring job. Thanks in advance!

i know a factory CD / cassette radio set up for a factory amp will direct swap for a regular one without an amp. but as for the pioneer, i'm not so sure. if it was me, i would pull the radio bezal out far enough to see the back of you're stock radio, and take a pic of the plugs, what they look like and where they go. bring said pic when you look at the fancy new radio, if it's got similar plugs, go for it. worst case scenario, you could throw it on Ebay and get you're money back.

Yea, that's what I was thinking skylark. These things are going for ridiculous prices on ebay. Or, I could offer it up to my peeps on here. I think it may be fine, but the bass would probably suck without some sort of amp. I think the sound would be too shrill.

I thought the Pioneer system was just different speakers and an amplified sub... and of course the 6 cd radio. Seems like it would work ok and as long as you have the same plugs, should be a pretty direct swap.

Speaking of radio, mine will not turn off, only down. Anyone have that issue? I may wish to switch as well, where can I get a new radio that has CD player? Tom

I've used these guys several times to find inexpensive OEM radios for people. You can probably find one on this forum in the classified as well.

Why not get a nice DD aftermarket like a Pioneer ? They match well, can even match lighting, and look alot better, and not POS like the stock ones. Also, the stock ones are maybe up to 10 watts RMS per channel (usually less) and an aftermarket is at least 14.

I would completely agree with this, but keeping the stock radio is a very common request particularly with Fords. Not sure why that is but I'd be willing to bet I get requests from Ford owners to fix their factory radios more than any other manufacturer. Chrysler is a close second.

I happen to just like the stock look of the stock radios. I think they just blend better than anything else. I also don't need blasting speakers and such, or a perfect BOSE like sound. I just don't like having a gap either under the small din size aftermarket radio height. I just think they look tacky. Call me OCD, but I just like to keep stuff stock. I just think it looks better, and I can put that money saved from an aftermarket sound system to better use, like filling that thirsty gas tank!
