Default Turn down the bass, I cant breathe.

Im one of those people who like my music loud. unfortunately all I can fit behind my regular cab seats are a couple of 8 inch subs. i could fit tens or twelves, but then the speaker enclosure wouldnt have enough volume to work the subs properly. i currently have the 8s temporarily behind my seat, but being a fairly extreme audiophile, i need more. so i had an idea. what if i cut out the back wall under the rear window, and cut out the the wall in the bed and welded a box back there about 1.5 to 2 foot back, and slid a much larger speaker enlcosure into it from the cab. pros- larger sub enclosure= more boom, more storage space behind the seat because the subs will be flush with the wall. cons= cosmetics, which i believe shouldnt be too bad. i can cover the subs with breathable carpet, and it would look completely stock from the inside, and i can cover where i bring the box into the bed with a tool box. no one would be the wiser unless they looked closely at the bed. feedback on this project would be good. i want to make sure that i cover all the bases. im planning on putting in 2 (3 maybe, is it possible?) 15 inch boss d155s.

Blow through's (hole in back wall for subs) are kinda taboo.. mostly due to the fact that they're so much work. if you do 2 or 3 15's, there will be no way you can stuff a toolbox over them to cover them up. your best bet would be a fiberglass solid tonneau cover for the bed. on top of that, dont make a box out of metal that you welded together.. i'll sound like a submarine going over a speedbump. make the box out of 3/4" mdf and be sure to seal in between the cab and bed.

2 or 3 15 ur ear drum will explode. I hade 2 15 in my jeep with a 1200 amp. And it would shake my eye balls. Ur nuts

ya, i was just welding the box for protection, i was goint to slide the mdf box into the welded box from the cab. tho using the bed cover seems like it could almost work. may be too much air space tho. and then the subs would be sharing air space at the same time. and im not sure but are those covers really all that air tight? i wouldnt know, never owned one. i think i might like that idea. and the amount of time, money, work is not a problem. its my baby, i gotta treat her good.

I wish I could find the link, it was a tundra or a tacoma, maybe a nissan (some sort of imprt truck) that made a blow through and put the subs in the toolbox. It had 2 or 3 12s I think...cannot remember exact details but it was very very nicely done.

maybe nuts, lol, but i like to take anything with wheels and turn it into a monsterous giant speaker. i drive my wife crazy. she has 3 tens in her car, not her choice, which are turned down most of the time, due to the baby on board. but even tho they are rarely used, i still had to put them them. like i said i have a serious obsession.

oh, you should definitly find that link justin. thats an even better idea. i will never put anything in the tool box, not tools at least, i have a tool box on my work truck already( chevy, not my choice.) but that would make it even more unnoticable. build an mdf enclosure based on the inside specs of the toolbox.

IIRC correctly, they had some other controls put in the toolbox, so the tool box could not be used as a toolbox anymore. The system took up 90% of the room in it...but I will see if I can find it.

hmmmmmmmm. that is pretty insane. i think ill keep my eye on that. i like the idea of sealing the box with bed liner. #1 makes it match the bed, #2 makes it so the box is completely sealed and weatherproof and i dont have to weld a box around it, which is awesome, because with the subs i wanted to put in, i was a little worried about buzzing on the metal back there if i couldn't properly mount it. Thanks a lot. that gave me a ton of insight. it's nice to know i wont be going this alone, and that i have someone to watch who has worked out the kinks already. i wouldnt have thought of using that accordian either. i was planning on making it hard and welding. any other pics, links or insight would be helpful. got a few months tho before the weather warms and i can tackle this all.

thats pretty ba. no one would ever freakin know. lol. i think i like toms link tho. be pretty bad to put a camper on tha back, and thatn extend the box through the bad and throw some seats back there on it. good for camping and whatnot.

I have a blowthrough in my ranger with only a pair of 12s on 3,000w (true 3,000w not overrated junk amp). If you're going to do it you MUST do it right. The more power you plan to run the more you have to beef up your electical (high output alternator, extra batteries, 1/0 wire, etc.) I just use a vinyl tonneau to cover the bed and siliconed anywhere that water could possibly come in. 15s wouldn't fit in my bed (it's a 1999) so before you buy and subs measure the height of your bed to make sure they'll fit. You can order an accordion boot (it's a gasket that seals the cut in the cab and the cut in the bed) online for about $75 for 15 ft, or you can find them in rv camper stores but they usually sell for about $6/ft.

Id like to see more pics of that if you have them. and how long did the whole process take? what did you use to cut the whole? i was planning on a grinder, but not sure how much control id have to make the lines straight. and i was considering the change of the alternator, but do you think it would be plausible to use only a capacitor? my plans are to put in a boss ol5kd (5000 w max at 1 ohm) to run two subs and a boss ol2400 (2400 w at 2 ohms). If my calculations are correct a 3.5 farad cap should more than cover it, but ive never done this high powered of a system before, so some advice would be great.

A fried of mine cut the cab and bed in an hour or two with a pneumatic chisel type bit and also a grinder. The grinder created a ton of sparks though so be careful and wear some eye protection. Here's what you do: lay out your cut on the inside of the cab first with a marker, making sure the 4 corners of the cut are rounded and not square. Then drill a small hole at each corner of the cut from the inside of the cab all the way through to the bed. Now you can see where the corners of the cut will be in the bed. The bed of my truck sits higher than the inside of my cab (which I didn't realize until after I already cut the inside) so make sure you do this step because I definitely skipped it.
As for your choice of equipment, I personally wouldn't run any of it but to each his own. Capacitors don't actually help your electrical system at all and falsely lead people to believe they can run more power than their electrical system can handle. Get yourself a good starting battery and do the "big 3" (add a 1/0 ground from your battery to the frame, 1/0 ground from the alternator to the frame, 1/0 power from your alt + to your battery +).
Before taking on this project I would first advise that you do the electrical upgrades first, then get yourself a nice cd player, a set of 6.5'' components for the front door (you'll need to buy adaptor plates or make them yourself out of mdf to allow 6.5s to fit in the front doors), a nice 2 channel amp to power the components, and a lot of deadener (raamat is what I use, or secondskin) to put on your front doors, floor of the truck, and the back wall (don't put it where you plan to cut the cab because it's a pain to pull off once it's on). The electrical upgrades will allow you to safely run high power amplifiers safely. If you skip the electrical upgrades your voltage will drop severely, causing your amps to blow and will cause the amps to send clipped signals to your speakers and subs. The deadener will dampen your doors and reduce road noise throughout your truck. I was installing various systems in my truck for 5 yrs before I realized how much sound deadener helps and you can truely notice a huge difference.
Then start saving up for the subs/sub amp/box and do that sometime down the road. I've learned it's much much better to do the basic upgrades first before you attempt to add this much bass. Your substage plays the least amount the bandwidth in music, and while I'm a HUGE basshead, upgrading the door speakers and deadening the vehicle was the best upgrade I've made. It makes the music sound so much better.
