Hi everyone! I have a 2010 ranger. 4 door xlt. I'd like to put a system in and I was hoping to get some help form you all. Basically I want to get good sound quality and shake the mirrors a bit.

I am on a budget and I am going to slowly put it together. It will be a three phase kinda thing.

Phase 1: head unit. Kenwood DPX308U. I plan to install this and run it with the stock speakers for a while.

Phase 2: sub. I want to instal a sub and amp and keep stalk speakers for a while. Sonicelectronix sells paired amps and subs. Is that a good route? What do you guys recommend? I'd like to stay around the $150-$250 mark here if at all possible. I am assuming 10's would be ideal. I'd like to hide the amp under the seat and build a box to sit behind the arm rest. What are your thoughts on subs, amps, box dimensions (I'll probably build the box myself), and placement of the sub in the truck?

Phase 3: Speakers. In my 92 ranger (that I never should have sold) I just unhooked the rear speakers and ran coaxial speakers in the front (no amp just straight from the head unit) and with the sub in the back and it sounded pretty good. Would that be okay to do here as well? What would you recommend as far as door speakers are concerned? Should I go the component speaker route? And if I do that should I amp them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sorry about how long that was earlier. Somehow a post that I must have accidentally copied from caraudioforum.com ended up in here with what I wanted to post here. Anyway. If you guys and gals have any words of wisdom I would greatly appreciate it! The people are caraudioforum don't get it. They keep private messaging me asking why I'm not filling the bed with speakers. I keep telling them because I still need it to be a truck! Haha. I figured you would all understand that better here.

Ok so the best place for the sub is behide the passenger seat and if u have a regular cab u need a shallow mount. Now they can be quite pricey so I highly reconmend buying one off eBay (beware of fakes stick to name brand audio). When building you box for the sub go sealed with a shallow mount and go as big as possible. Don't spare any space (this is a reason to go behide the passenger) the bigger the box the better the sub sounds ppl get confussed thinking shoullw sub = sorry tiny box. So yes a 10" is most likely your best bet I alway recommend 300 watt rms NOT MAX or PEAK power don't be fooled by thos number they mean nothing u need to look at the rms. amp should also be a name brand (better the amp the better the sound will be) I do not recommend eBay or any website for this. Save the extra few bucks and buy it from a store u will be happy you did

For the speearkers behide the seats. I plan on doing what u said u did in you 92 in my 96 I do not see why it wouldn't work in your 2010.

I hope this helps I kinda blanketed on but I like this kind of stuff so if i wasn't clear or if u have anymore question go ahead and ask no stupid questions when money Is involved

You can power a set of component speakers and a sub very well with a 4 channel amp. You budget of $250 for the amp and sub is gonna be a little tight for quality components. Try to get a Pioneer head with 6 way RCA outputs and controls for crossovers and sub.

I'm no audiophile, but here's my input..

If you're on a budget and want good sound but don't need to wake up the neighbors, consider a Basslink ii ($200 shipped on amazon). I love mine, and it's plenty of bass for me (and only on 1/2 gain). It comes with a remote bass control, which comes in handy for different music styles.

I have mine mounted on the floor behind the driver's seat. (I removed the jump seat, I never carry 4 people.) I may make a shelf over it so I can still utilize that space.

For the price, ease of installation, sound quality, and minimal loss of space, you can't beat it. No $200 amp/sub/box combo will come close in my opinion.

I'm running Polk DB571 speakers in all 4 doors unamped, and honestly it's plenty with the basslink. I use the head unit's high pass filter to let the sub do all the low end work. Though I do regret not splurging for components in the front, but that'll come later. Of course you could amplify your speakers, but if $ is tight then I'd save that for last.

Heres my 2 cents:

If you are flexible on the HU and would consider a single DIN: $170
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-KDC-X496.html

I have always been a fan of choosing amps and subs. Usually packaged kits are the ones the vendor has a hard time selling stand alone.

Single 12 Sub Recommend: $120
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-11P2D412.html

Amp (I have the 1.1500 and it works very well) $150
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...NX1.1000D.html

Sub Box $60 (cant build it that cheap) Shows 1.10 Cubic feet
http://www.halfpricecaraudio.com/For...sure-Black.htm

$500 out the door for all.

There ya go, now yer 2 cents richer

Just my .02 but upgrade the speakers before the sub....stock speakers with a sub will be very imbalanced and sound like pooh....if you can save a bit a decent quality previous generation head unit (pick your flavor) and a decent quality amp (match the rms to the speakers for premium sound goals) then search for your sub....

Have fun!

Well some of my advice...

I looked high and low for something that had great sound and didnt need a lot of work...I had a friend tell me about "mtx thunderform" sub enclosures..for the four door (which I have as well) it can fit 2 10 inch subs and the back seats fold down FLAT and it sounds awesome you can buy em off eBay for around 300 I ripped the crappy mtx subs it came with and installed JL audio W1's 500w with alpine head unit and amp I get the whole truck shaking and it's got nice deep bass very smooth check them out it's worth a gander and if you want I can post pics

Just to let everyone know (since people are still posting here), he has already decided on equipment and has speakers, subwoofer, amplifier, and a head unit in his possession now.

Yeah thanks! Sorry I havent been on in a few days. I was busy with work. I have made all of my selections and almost everything is installed. I just have to run the remote and RCA cables to the head unit and speaker wire from the amp to the sub and it's done! Well I have to mount everything. But after that it's done! And I will detail it after that and put up some pics.

Yes it did! Although, wait until I show you the hole I found in the firewall on mine. You will be jealous. There was a hole already there with a small plug in it. It's was perfect for the grommet that came in my wiring kit. It was about 5 inches from the bottom in the firewall. It was just to the drivers side of the gas pedal. That means the only drilling I had to do was under the hood so I can mount the fuse holder. The ultimate goal is to be able to get it back to stock without anyone knowing there was ever a system there. I pulled the jump seats and I am building something that will mount with the bolts from the jumps seat that I can then use to anchor the amp and sub box. If I sell the truck down the road I just unbolt and stick the jump seats back in. That's all the plan anyway... We will see if it gets done though. The 15 hour work days 6 days a week have been slowing me down.
