Cheap and clean double din installed
I just installed the Panasonic cq-5800u in my ranger this morning. Looks like a OEM unit now that I have it installed ( which is what I wanted), it has a I pod hookup and best of all it was only $114. Its cheep, the sound quality is pretty good, and it has all of the features that I need.
Here are some pics
Old vs. new
A few of it installed
I should mention that this unit was a royal pain to install as the Metra double din kit had to be severely modified to get it to work. All of the modifications to the it were made to the front cover but we are talking about cutting it in half and and dremeling the F out it. I dont know if it is the dimensions of the unit or if the kit from metra was off, but I would suggest getting a different install kit if you are thinking of getting this unit.
Thats about it, just thought I would share in case anyone else was looking for a cheep and good looking upgrade to there head unit.

Those metra kits are so easy to put in. I do it all day. Looks good though.

maybe this head unit is a bit abnormal in its dimensions and that is what caused the fitment issues. Who knows but it is in now and I am loving it.

I'm definitely digging the low-profile OEM look, that's probably one of the best ones Ive seen like that.

Eh, to learn more about this head unit I did a quick google search and funny enough the very first review I saw said...

I installed this receiver in my 07 Ford Ranger. The sound quality is a huge improvement over stock. My only complaint is with the install kit. I removed the material from the top and bottom of the opening, but the receiver would not fit the opening on the sides. To make it work I had to remove some material from the mounting brackets to make them thinner. Also, the trim piece that comes with the Scosche kit does not fit this receiver. The receiver is such a tight fit that it looks quite well without the trim piece, but I'm wondering why it doesn't fit. Is it possible that all double DINs are not the same dimension? Also, neither the receiver, nor the install kit come with the 5mm screws required to mount the brackets to the receiver. I picked some up at Home Depot. Last complaint: wiring instructions for both the receiver and the Scosche wiring adapter had mistakes. Take your time and you should be able to figure it out as I did.
Great receiver for the money, but installation was somewhat challenging.

I'm a video/nav guy but I like your install, looks as good as a shop install.I never solely go by the color of the wires when installing.Check the wiring diagrams, then you'll never go wrong.
