Default 1992 Ranger Question

Alright, so I have a '92 Ranger Stx 4.0 Extended Cab.

I have an aftermarket Pioneer HU (DEH-3200ub) and aftermarket speakers (pioneer 4 way in the front and infinity 3 way in the back.)

I want to install an amp, nothing fancy, but pushing 50watts RMS more per speaker. (amp is Boss r1004 found on Amazon for 40 bucks.)

I was planning on putting the amp behind the rear driver side seat that folds down, there is quite a bit of room behind it. But to my surprise, there is already -something- there, no idea what it is. Wires running to it, my first thought was that it was a factory amp, but after lots of Google searches, I have found nothing on 92 rangers having a factory amp.

So if anybody has any idea as to what it is, that would be great. I will go snap some pics of it here in a few minutes, they should be up in a little bit.

someone probably hooked something up prior to you getting it. Unless its JBL... that was Fords stereo brand of choice in the early 90's. Than it just might be stock.

I didn't see that it said JBL anywhere. And my grandpa bought this truck new in 92, and I bought it from him four years ago, he never did anything to the stereo.

That looks like some sort of ecm component. Can you get a better pic of that logo?

ECM related. Work around it. Maybe put the amp on the P/S. I wouldnt recommend unplugging it.

Stay far away from anything that says Boss, Dual, Lanzar, ... a few more ...

Boss is actually stepping it up in their components actually. Most of their amps and decks are getting better. Subs still crap. But the rest you mentioned... trash.

I had a Boss r1100 powering two kicker 12 comps (I was going for a really cheap setup and I succeeded) and it sounded really good to me. The amp powered it just fine, and it wasn't a cheap feeling amp. I think Boss is alright. The others though, yeah I know.

See what I mean ? That Boss amp claims 1100 watts and actually outputs 250 watts RMS. You need a 300-400 watts RMS mono amp for those Kickers.

Yeah, but I knew that when I bought it. But it still powered them good. People got mad at me at stoplights when I had it up, so I assume it wasn't doing a bad job.

I just ordered the r1004 4 channel amp, 100watts x 4, but its RMS is 50watts x 4. I got it for 15 bucks including shipping on Amazon after signing up for their credit card. I know it's not performance, or anywhere close, but in my little pickup I just like to enjoy my music. And this will do just that.

Understood. To each his own. I don't have the best setup, either.
