New stereo system, ideas/help please..
Hey everyone, just joined the forum, i recently bought a 2002 extended cab ranger, and want to step up the sound system.
I have broused the forms a little bit, and like this box idea,
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/audio...e-journey.html
but i have a few questions,
1. whats the best size sub(s) to put in here? i know i want a shallow mount, i want it mounted as close to back wall as possible. i like it loud and deep bass, but not rattle my head off loud, box sizes?
2. what size/brand amp to power the subs?
3. i want the shallow mounts, and will probably remove passanger side rear jump seat and mount box there. that way i still have drivers side rear to put stuff. anyone done this?
4. iam new to this stuff( 17 yr, old) and will be asking for the sound system for my 18th b-day... so figured i woul ask the people with experience whats best!!
thanks for any replys,
david

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
What kind of music do you listen to. What type of budget do you want to spend. Are you looking for a full system (headunit door speakers amps+ sub) oor just headunit amp and sub? Little bit more info and people can better help.
And don't expect "deep bass" from a shallow mount. My experience with a shallow mount was it filled the low end notes very well, but didn't have enough kick for me.

ok, sorry about that.. i listen to mostly rap/hip-hop and rock. i just want deck, subs, and amp. iam max iam looking to spend is $400-500.
ill probably order it through sonic electronix. as for the shallow mounts, i guess normal size is fine, just as long the passanger seat will move all the way back lean back too, (iam going to take out the passenger side jump seat) so i guess a normal size sub will fit, but just a wider box, than deep i suppose?? like two subs in one wide, somewhat-shallow box...
also, when i get a new head unit, subs, and amp when i hook it all up, will i still be able to hook up the door speakers too? so its one whole system?
thanks again for the help.
----------
i want something like this setup, but only one one side (passanger and middle. one box)
is this a normal mount sub, or narrow mount?

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
That's a prefab JL audio box.
For best results, you need to decide how much power and what you want out of a sub system, pick out your sub or subs, then have a box made for the sub or subs. Sounds like you will be wanting a ported box, which is best for hiphop and rap. Different subwoofers require varying box and port sizes and styles.
There are prefab boxes to choose from, but again, you need to get the best sub for the box and/or port size and style.
There are also enclosed subs (prefab box with subwoofer installed) and powered subs (prefab box with subwoofer installed and amplifier builtin) to choose from.
These links are examples only. Where you choose to buy from is your benefit/mistake.

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
A question for you guys, will a shallow mount sub, say a 15" kicker, will that put out hard deep bass with a proper sized/ ported box for it?And amp to power it. Or do the shallow mounts just not put out enough...?

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
$400-500 wont buy much as far as quality goes... for a good all around setup you should invest at LEAST $1000. But with what you want to spend... I put together a little list... I used equipment and prices for stuff at my shop... just because its what I know best.
-Alpine Deck. $149
-2 Quantum 10" Woofers in stock prefab box. $199
-Audiobahn 250 Watt x 2 channel amp $199
-Wiring kit $35
Total: $582. Just a little start. Later Id consider changing the speakers out too.

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
The deck looks good
Never really was HIP to the 'Slim Line" sub-woofers
you could get away with the deck, but i would go with maybe a SINGLE 10" or 12" sub like JL Audio W6 in a good size enclosure(you mentioned you want to take up only one rear side)
also... maybe a Hi-Phonics Amp.
Those items will keep your prices low, butafter a wire install kit, thats still gunna run ya about $700 for the complete system

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
Your sub choice is good... the amp is questionable... but your deck choice you'd regret. JVC having a lot of problems with that particular interface. If you want a low price deck... I suggest this:

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
ok, just a question here, when someone says you can bridge an amp, what does that mean? is it better to do that?
and whats the better way to hook up a 2-channel amp to two different subs, series, or parallel??
thanks again, as i am totally new to this..

Food for thought....unless you have a very (i mean VERY) small adult that wants to ride on in the back on the little things ford calls seats, ya may as well jerk em both out and make room for something else. Even a kid couldnt ride back there safely or comfortably.
.
Just a random thought that may help you in making a decision for better audio. Post pix when you have it all put together

I suck at explaining in words but i'll give it a shot. "bridging" is when instead of hooking up speakers/subs individually to a "channel", you take one wire, hook it to the + end of one channel then the - end of the other channel. It utilizes the amps full power band. I think I said that right.

You can also invest in a custom box that creates a bench seat in the back. We build them all the time. Its expensive because you have to make it out of stronger wood to sit on. But it would be a thought if you ever have to haul someone in the back.

Re: New stereo system, ideas/help please..
Ya I think iam just gonna remove both rear seats, and put in shallow subs with custom boxes to take there place, and the amp under the seat. I want it to look clean as I still want room in the back to put stuff. I might do a shelf thing on the passenger side box, but drivers side, I want it as flat against rear wall as possible but still meet the cubic ft. Requirement the sub needs... So I'll make the box wide. Is there any other ways to make the box "seem" bigger but it's smaller? If you know what I mean...?
----------
Example: say a sub needs 1.25 of cubic ft. To work properly.. Is there a way I can make a box that is like 1 or even .75 cubic ft. But the sub will still work right? Like a port, or some sort of filler material in the box? Idk much about this stuff. Lol just trying to figure it out the best I can... And learn something..

Sometimes you can trick a sub into 'seemin' like it is in a larger box by adding polyfill in the box, but not much larger. What kind of music do you listen to most ? A single sealed box can be smaller than a single ported box, but not all subwoofers like sealed boxes, and they aren't as efficient and need alot more power to be as loud.
