Default Subwoofer Box Air Volume

I have a question, how can you, or where can you find, the required volume inside of a box to get the maximum performance out of your subs? I have a JBL GTO 12, not sure of the exact model number. I won't have them for a couple of weeks as their 700 miles away and I have to go get them. I want to design a box for one down firing 12. I have 2 of them, but one is blown, so for now I'm just going to work with the one until I can buy a matching replacement. I don't want the box to be too small, but I also don't want it to be unnecessarily large. So again my question is, if I didn't make it quite clear. Where can I find the information on required box volume for a single down firing JBL 12. Thanks in advance! =D

OH! And if port's are helpful or not for the specific set-up. I'm pretty much a tard at any kind of measurements.
