Default Factory Wiring

What size is our factory wiring in our trucks to the speakers, 18AWG or 22AWG? Reason asking, Im trying to figure out if I should run new 16AWG wire or just use the factory wire when setting up a amp.

I'd guess it's 18ga for the oem speakers.

Depending on how much power your amp produces, 16ga would be a good step up.

Just buy a roll of Scosche 16g from Walmart and run new wires for amping the door speakers. Don't even bother with the factory wiring.

I was just checking because I am looking at the Infinity Kappa 680.9cs (90W RMS) models for both front and back. The whole thing with the "True 4 Ohm" is kinda confusing. Doing the research that I have done so far, I probably need 16AWG to keep down the resistance so I can be as close to a 2-3Ohm load instead of 4-Ohm to the amp so I can get the most out of my amp.

Wiring isn't going to drop your ohm load.

You know what, I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and bump it up to 14AWG? What do you think?

It's not going to make a difference.

I gotcha Tyler, I didn't see your response until I I went ahead and double responded. I got a question though, if these 2-ohm speakers can become a 4-ohm load, wouldn't a normal 4-ohm speaker maybe get up to a 5-ohm load at the amp?

Doubtful. A way to check though is to check the impedance on the wire before you hook it up to the amp. I highly doubt you'll get any impedance rise though.

Realistically, you could use 4ga wire for the speakers & it probably wouldn't effect the resistance value that much... the actual ohms of a speaker can change depending on several variables.

If your speakers are rated at 90w, 16ga wire should be fine.
If you've got a 2ch amp & you want to run 4 speakers in parallel for a 2ohm load per channel, the 16ga would still be good as long as you wire each speaker directly to the amp. That way each run of wire will not be bogged down trying to push all that power through a single pair of wires.

Now, if you were running 500w to a subwoofer, I'd jump up to 14ga or 12ga, but for mids/highs 16ga would be good.
