New Radio Suggestions?
Alright, i got about $120 in the budget for putting in a new radio, speakers, amp etc. I realize that ain't much but i'm hoping to take it 1 step at a time. The main thing i want is a new radio with a CD player, the cassette just isn't cutting it. As far as i know, i have the "premium sound system" from the factory in there, at least that's what i was told the black box behind the seat and the auto set button was for.
So i guess the question(s) is. What would be a good receiver? How much would some good speakers run? Would upgrading the receiver make a difference in quality? Would the current amp and speakers work?
I'd probably go with a single din setup with the cubby hole thing, and since it's the premium setup, i think i need special wiring?
So..any advice would be helpful, sorry for writing a novel, and thanks in advance for the help.
------
EDIT: I should probably add....
I'm not looking for a massive system that will shake windows, just something that sounds halfway decent and isn't going to cost an arm and a leg.

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
I know you stated you're on a budget, but sound quality and a solid product are important here.. idk if you're planning on using an ipod, flash drive, mp3 player or if you're still in the stone age and using cd's.. but i recommend anything by pioneer, alpine, sony and jvc. NEVER get a kenwood deck. kenwood is the result of shit taking a shit (a turd coming from within another turd).
As for the speakers, again i will recommend pioneer, alpine and kicker.
Wiring, shouldnt be an issue as 3rd gen rangers (assuming you're speaking of the truck in your avatar) did not come with a premium sound package. The wiring will be the same as an explorer, aerostar, escort and mustang of that era.. i cant remember the part # for the harness you need off the top of my head, but you'll be able to find it easily at your local stereo shop/best buy/wal mart for around $20.

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
Alright Cool, I'm heading down to Best Buy sometime this week, been checking their site and the decks I've looked at have been Alpine and Pioneer.
Speakers i'll probably wait on yet, but I saw walmart had some sonys for a decent price.
Guess my uncle was full of shit when he told me about the wiring harness (doesn't surprise me) Thanks for clarifying that for me
Yes, i'm still in the stone age and using CD's, the decks i've looked at had the USB port on them for a flashdrive so i might end up doing that since i really have no need for a MP3 player other than this.
Thanks again for the reply, really appreciate it man!

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
No problem, if you go with an alpine or pioneer you wont regret it.
As for the speakers, wal-mart does carry pioneer speakers as well and they're normally around the same price as the sony's.. i would try to steer towards the pioneers, even if they are shady wal-mart pioneers.
You may be able to catch a special at best buy when you go in, often times they'll run a "buy the same brand speakers such and such radio and get discounted or free install" special or something. Be sure to ask about that.
I just got out of the car audio industry about 6 months ago, some days i kinda miss it.lol

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
Edgeman, not to hijack a thread, but I have to ask why such the disdain for kenwood. And no, I'm not try to start anything. I'm just wanting your personal opinion as you stated experience in 12V installs. Thanks.
Schultzkenneth,
Another option would be to check a local car audio store. They sometimes have good used equipment discounted as the guys with the big bucks will always want the latest and greates equipment. So they have to sell the old stuff to buy the keep up with the jones' stuff.
I have found some great deals this way.

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
i have had both pioneer's,a nd alpines in my cars, and i will tell you this, as i learned with alpines, if you go towards the lower end alpines, you will not get some amenities like having extra pre-outs, USB port, ipod compadability, not sure about the pioneers, but they have both the pioneer line, and premiere line, and the past few years i have had nothing but pioneers in both my trucks, the vette, and the VW, and pound for pound probally the best stereo i have ever owned... as for speakers, i put the pioneer 6X8 speakers from walmart(they ran about $59.97 a pair) and have had zero problems with them, and i beat the shit out of them on a daily basis

i have also owned kenwoods, and they are not a bad brand in my opion, the first one i had installed the place thet installed it did something, and it did something to the parking lights in my honda, and the second one i put in, i didn't have it long enough to get to know it due to some douchebag stealing my car
and i also noticed when i did the stereo in my corvette that previous owner told me he had the stereo "professionally installed" they hacked up all the factory wiring for the stereo, i am in no way a professional, i don't think thats the correct way to do it, i can do a way better job with an install, and wiring kit from walmart then some of the work i have seen out there

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
Wow people who know there stuff! I like this forum its funny cuz all of you are right. Kenwood and pioneers are good speakers there built ford tough! and jvc are a good head unit decent price there all perfect for some one who want a nice stereo in there truck! But how dare you compare alpine to Kenwood or pioneer? alpine Is competition grade quality! You will never here of some one with a sweet Kenwood system win any sort of sub off!
But to answer your question man you can can q deck and speakers at Wal-Mart pioneer or Sony. (dont get Sony by far the worst garbage ever!) As a package deal at Wal-Mart for like $80 make sure u but the right size speakers

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
Pioneer! I installed a new HU and 4 6x9's off amazon and I payed $200 for about $560 worth of stuff.
I beat the crap out of all my stuff and this system still produces great. Only regret I have is not buying 6 1/2's for the doors.

Re: New Radio Suggestions?
Hate to dig up the old thread but..oh well.
Got a buddy of mine, wants to sell me his Pioneer DEH-1400 headunit for $20. He says it's in good shape, works, etc. All he's got is the radio, faceplate and some wires for it. I haven't seen it yet, but i was wondering if any of you guys have any knowledge of them and if it's worth the 20 bucks.
