Default Premium sound wiring

I'm in over my head installing an aftermarket radio in my 95 Ranger. I could see the connectors I picked up with the unit weren't right when the old unit came out, so I found a diagram and started cutting and connecting wires accordingly. The new Kenwood unit lights up nice but no sound. A little further research here indicates my old truck has the premium sound system. I'm in a little too deep to go looking for the mentioned connector box/plug and running wires to each speaker looks like a big pain. Has anyone found a better workaround. Seems like the right wire to power up the factory amp might be the ticket but I have no clue.

Btw, Autozone has what looks like a nice Kenwood head on clearance (in this area. E. TN, maybe everywhere I don't know) right now if you are looking for a new radio. The model is KDC-MP345U, it is supposed to be Ipod compatible and I think it will be real nice if I can get the sounds out .

Thanks .. Matt

I wonder how different your wiring is from my truck. I have the factory manuals for the 97, I might be able to swing over and help with this.

Thanks Richard,
I have an adapter on order, not sure if it integrates or bypasses the factory amp. Should be faster and easier than new wires to the speakers. Now I have to patch back everything I cut.

Later .. Matt

Thumbs up Re: Premium sound wiring

New radio in and working great.
Well here is the rest of the story in case someone else gets into this situation. Picked up the new plug set from Autozone today ($20). Started connecting the obvious stuff like power, Ign. and speaker wires. How to power the factory amp not real obvious. Called the tech line at the manufacture of the plug set (Metra) rather than experiment. I wish I had got the guys name to start. I've never dealt with anyone as worthless and rude as this guy. When I told him the part number of the Metra plug set he bluntly stated "that plug set won't work with a 95 ranger. The pack it was sealed in plainly said "Ford premiun sound system 1095-98". When I told him he bluntly said " I told you that set won't work with your truck" and it went down hill from there.

Now I'm mad and decide to go for the possible smoke test. Found the wires that seemed like power and ground to the factory amp and connected the power one to the ignition wire and grounded the other. Turned the key and everything worked perfect.

Conclusion: The plug set was totally unnecessary. The factory amp isn't really a big deal, only two more connections than otherwise. In my case the power to the amp wire is Lt Green/purple labeled in the diagram on rangerstation.com as power (B+). And the ground is black/lt green.

I scanned the Metra color code chart and saved it. If will help anyone I'll be happy to e-mail it. And the part number for the plug set is 70-5600 The rude dude at Metra Tech declared I had to had to have a 70-5603 to ever make the thing work. Looking at photos of the 70-5603 on line it appears to have some RCA plugs that might be handy if using an aftermarket amp.

It is going to be great not to need an FM transmitter to play my Ipod in the future. I've had several transmitters over the years and have never been happy with any of them.

I think I killed 4 of those transmitters for the Ipod before I got the hookup to the stereo...good choice definately

Glad to hear that you got the truck fixed!

I know you trip a lot. Have you found http://www.podiobooks.com/ ? There are some great audio books there free. Links to the ones I like on my website. A good audio book makes a trip seem half as long to me.

Haha I have! I also listen to a podcast from my favorite radio station back home. I love music, but after awhile on the road...it all blurs together lol
