Default sub questions

I have had a system in my truck since before I had my license. But when I did the install I bough a cheaper sealed box for my L5. I have been contemplating ifi should build a new ported box for it where the sub is mounted so it points to the side.( right now it points up) or I have been seeing people pack there sub boxes with cotton fluff and stuff like that. So my questions are #1 what does stuffing the sub box do? #2 would a ported box sound better? #3 would it sound better if it was aimed to the side instead of straight up?

I had a sealed box before and the ported box hits harder then the sealed. Never seen any one stuff cotton stuff in a box before.

My new ported box also hits even harder when I roll the windows down.

Yeah my hits really hard when I roll the windows down but I have always heard ported boxes hit harder. But would it sound better if the sub was aimed to the side instead of up?

Don't know about side vs. up. It might "sound better" to you. Mine faces down.
Infinity offers enclosure specs with the owners manual. Ported and not. They also give specific locations and sizes for the ports.
I checked here
http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/S...id/0/SFV/30046
and some of the item descriptions show specs for enclosures but not all of them do.
Contact Kicker, see what they say.

This is just from my experience from when i had a system in my truck. I am not an expert when it comes to this.lol

Ok i have tried facing the subs every which way and for one sub alone i would always face it to the side. If i had more then one sub they had to be faced towards the front of the truck and tilted up a lil bit.

I have done the whole stuffing of the box before and what i have learned was it was suppose to make it seam like it had more space then it did because it would mess with the airflow in the box. Now again that is just what i have learned i am not an expert..

I did help when i had a 12 in a box that was a lil smaller then it was suppose to be i stuffed it with a ton of cotton batting it made it a lil better.

Build you a ported box. If you want the sub facing the side, do it. I've had my sub like that before and it sounded pretty good.

swapping a sub that was broken in with a sealed box to a ported box is bad for the sub.

not saying his will just saying i have seen it cause issues. just like swapping from a small box to a large one. there are plenty of people who have posted saying the sound is different vs a new sub broken in using that style box.

it dosnt break in and then just stay at a certain softness though. a subwoofer, all speakers actually, never stops changing. the soft parts continue to soften and eventually fail at some point. and yes sound will be different between new, broken in and near dead speakers because the speaker moves more freely, the new one is much stiffer.

and the only issues with swaping from a small box to alarger box would be that the sub can move more freely and can bottom out. ex my sub DD 1508 can bottom out in a 1.1 cube foot box on 500 watts but in a .7 cubic foot box it wont bottom out or at least do it less.

posting from my phone, sry for poor spelling and sentance structure.

I really want a ported box and I guess if my L5 gets messed up somehow from switching from a sealed to a ported. That just mean I have a reason to upgrade to an L7 or solox. Has anyone ever had a kicker solox 18" in a ranger? Lol
