For 20 bucks i would try to hook it up for sure. Cuz even if it dont work out you can prolly get your money back by sellin the faceplate alone on ebay.

I'd stick with the Pioneer or Alpine.

I would like to replace the AM/FM/CD OEM unit in my 1997 XLT. The original unit is model F77F-18C815-AB. Based on the OEM unit, is the truck equipped with premium sound? I can't locate a readily visible amp and don't know which type of replacement unit to search for.

Having built musclecars since the 60's sound reproduction quality has always been important. Cost also. My experience has been that Alpine will do a better job with guitar influenced rock. You seem to get a cleaner high and more distinct drums. Kenwood seemed to do a better job on the bass end. Take a CD of your musical preference and try out different units. Your ears will tell you the one you are looking for.

what i have in mine is and alpine head unit with a 750 watt kicker amp and 10 shallow kicker subs in a reg cab. lets just say the rear window will flex on the harder notes. i know there are companys out there that make boxes for shallow subs and if you remove the trays behind the seat they fit perfectly

I got the truck with the radio/CD removable front gone so I'm still looking around for a replacement, I kinda hoped a straight replacement would work but reading some stuff about wiring harnesses etc above I'm not too certain what I need to do, there are speakers in the rear quarters of the cab that look factory original and I'm not into HD purity, just like to listen to NPR and local 60's and 70's FM stuff so if a straight plug in will power everything I'll be happy.

For personal reasons I don't shop at Walmart - is Best Buy a reasonable supplier of bottom end radio/CD?

EDIT: Do I need to pull the head unit from the dash to ID the make/model and see if a new front makes economic sense?

NEVER get a kenwood deck. kenwood is the result of shit taking a shit (a turd coming from within another turd).

As for the speakers, again i will recommend pioneer, alpine and kicker.

Wiring, shouldnt be an issue as 3rd gen rangers (assuming you're speaking of the truck in your avatar) did not come with a premium sound package. The wiring will be the same as an explorer, aerostar, escort and mustang of that era.. i cant remember the part # for the harness you need off the top of my head, but you'll be able to find it easily at your local stereo shop/best buy/wal mart for around $20.
I actually had a 95 model standard cab Ranger that was amplified from the factory. Tha factory amp was located behind the passenger seat. They are very rare and have only seen 1 other one (a couple of weeks ago, coincidentally also a 95) in the 6+ years Ive been installing.

The truck has only the "back" of a radio/CD in the dash, front was gone when I got it.

How do I remove what's left? It seems to be an aftermarket product, does not have the Ford "holes" on either side.
I've tried (gently) to insert a broad blade either side to push down what look like little detents but it doesn't want to budge.

I'm trying to post a photo from Shutterfly but can't seem to get the URL for just one frame, instead it's for the whole album (advice on THAT would also be appreciated!!)

I have an amp behind my passenger seat as well.

For the record, i ended up keeping the stock radio and speakers. Put the money toward other stuff. Thanks for the help though, hopefully i'll upgrade it some day and if so i will take all the advice into account. Great info. Hopefully it helps someone else as well.
