Default Best place to mount CB antenna?

I considering a couple diffrent places(rear bumper, ordering Alon's Cb mount bracket and using that, or using one of the postes that hold my bed shell on) Does anyone have any recommendations? Are any of those spots good or bad? Anything would help

There's no bad spot, really.

Depends if you want directional, or omni.

Wilson 500 or 1000 magnet mount and stick it on the roof. They are great antennas and the magnets are strong. www.sparkyscbshack.com Best location is always the roof.

Dead center of the roof will give you the best performance in all directions. If you're really only using to talk to nearby vehicles, then it doesn't matter where you put it.

thx for your imput guys. the antenna itself is a 5ft Firestik. I was probably going to use the Alon mount, but i don't know if he is making them or selling them still(he hasnt replied to my post in the topic). If someone want to send me one, I can pay for it, and pay for whatever the shipping cost is. Just PM me or pos a reply if you have an Alon mount you would be willing to sell.

I believe he is still making them, maybe send him a PM? However, if you have a local welder, he could easily make the mount that alon makes...

I would like to find a location to get optimum performance. I was thinking about a custom made mounting bracket that would mount the antenna on the left or right corner of the bed behind the rear cab window with an off set to hold it just outside of the outside perimeter of the bed. It would use the top inner rolled over lip of the bed (bulk head) end and hook under the rolled over edge against the rear cab wall.

I don't know if that was clear but I'll post a diagram when I have it designed. That would get the antenna substantially higher and closer to the roof. With a 55 inch or longer it would still give you almost three feet over the top of the roof.

Isn't optimal performance based on the antenna being positioned at the highest point on the vehicle?

Any help here is appreciated.

Best regards,

Oldsoldier

Not necessarily the highest. I have heard HAMs say that you want to mount antennas in the middle of the flattest plane (like the roof). I have seen mounts in the center of a tool box, that seems like a good idea. I've also seen them on side view mirrors and brush guards so the difference may be negligible. I'm not sure where I am going to stick mine. Still thinking about it.

Here is a good little writeup on the "Dual Antenna" phenomenon that I see going around. I googled to find out if it would or would not provide a better signal. It turns out, they don't if you are not a semi. Also they are very directional. Here is the writeup with some good tips on where/how to mount a CB antenna.

Ok, you will want to mount the antenna in the center of the roof for omni-directional use. It gives the best ground plain. They sell heavy duty magmounts online, or you could dill a hole in your roof. If you mount it up front or behind the cab, then you will get stronger signals in different directions that others. Now about the dual antennas, if you are going to be putting dual antennas on, then the need to be a minimum distance apart depending on the frequency. Also the both need to be tune correctly. If they are not, then they will fight each other and you will lose signal strength. Make sure you have a low swr and you should be good.
