Default Stock Radio Swap

Hey, I'm new to this forum and rangers, but the knowledge you guys have and share is outstanding. I bought my son a 1998 ranger xl. It has the stock am/fm/cassette radio. I was wondering if a stock am/fm/cd radio will just plug and play. I haven't removed the old one yet or purchased a new one yet, so I don't know how many pigtails there are in the back of mine or the new one. I'm looking for a single cd player becuase I also have an 01 f-250 6 disc and it just quit playing and ejecting them.
Thanks,
Ugmug

^X2 Ford redesigned them for 2004 so don't let that discourage you, the plugs are still the same.

I'd love to have a stock radio for my '98 XLT...the aftermarket installed by the po has tens of tiny buttons and equalizers and colored lights. All I need is an AM radio with 5 station presets and a volume knob - they haven't even made a basic AM-FM car radio in 40 years. Plus my truck bounces so much I can't operate the radio while it's moving. Your son is lucky to have a caring pop and you won't have any problem installing the latest...only vehicles with proprietary speaker systems are a pain requiring new wire runs into the doors etc as are many Euro cars...not the Ranger tho.

The only thing I really hate about the plain am/fm radio is that Ford redesigned it in 98 and really cheaped out on it. No more Scan button and only 4 presets as opposed to the former design's 6. However, they kept the old design until '03 for the tape deck and single CD deck.
