Default help with wiring --- signal ground vs chassis ground....

I am installing a JVC hdr40 cd player using a crutchfield custome wire harness. no amp, only cd player and 2 door speakers.

Question:

out of the custom wiring harness is a black wire for the chassis ground.
another wire coming from the custom harness is a Black wire with white stripe labeled signal ground.

Out of the JVC harness is only one black wire for chassis ground.

The JVC harness does not have a signal ground wire.

Am I supposed to connect all those 3 wires together??

Crutchfield's instructions don't say anything about this.

Please help ASAP!!

----------

Note. I currently have black to black wired together. Do I simply tape of the signal ground black with white stripe out of the custom harness and not connect it to anything??

well if they are labeled grounds then they all must be grounded.

You can either tie them both together or just use the chassis ground. It doesn't really matter. I was confused about that to. I have no idea what the signal ground is for? But like I said it doesn't matter as long as you use the chassis ground. It may have something to do with the aux input???

The chassis ground gets wired to the ground wire on the harness. The signal ground is meant for the rca cable to be get grounded to. Its meant to help eliminate any ground loop noise from the rca cables.

^ good info. Thanks for the responce. I just ran into the same problem with a Pioneer Head Unit (DEH-P8300UB) and crutchfield wiring harness.

You could always call Crutchfield. They have great customer service. But that takes 5 minutes. Which is 4 minutes longer than google.

I wired Chassis Ground to wiring harness ground, and capped-off the Signal Ground since my RCA cables do not have an independent ground (just L and R channel.)

Learned how to soldier on this project too... Took 2 trips to radio shack and $25 but its pretty fun when you have the time. I reccomend soldering if you are gonna shake your truck around offroading allot.

Signal grounds are used as a refrence for the signal.

in the audio prosessing they combine the signal (with a 0VRMS refrence) with the inverted signal ground (also at 0VRMS) and use it to cancel noise on the signal.

this is what i use it for on a daily basis (being a broadcast engineere) id assume its the same kinda thing here. Id tie them all to the same ground point though. that will be fine for you.

Short version, is the signal ground and chassis ground can be connected to the same ground wire outside the head unit.

Long version... Chassis ground is the ground of the stereo chassis and non audio related components inside it. Signal ground is the ground for the audio amp and other audio related circuits. By separating them and connecting to ground at one common point, you eliminate ground loops that produce ugly noises.

The signal ground is NOT for connection to the RCA cables or anything else.
