Default What just happened?

so i have an alpine deck in my 99 ranger...
i was playing a song from my ipod as i pulled into my friends driveway, which was pretty bumpy. all of a sudden, it just freaked out and turned off, then on again and continued to do this for 7 or 8 seconds. i quickly tryed to turn it off, and it stayed off. then later on i turned it back on, and it did the same thing, power on, power off over and over. finally, it just quit, and i smelled a faint burning smell.
DID I FRY THE DECK OR JUST A FUSE IN MY CAR? i can check tomorrow, just not now cuz its dark and raining.

any imput would be greattttt...im super nervous/frusterated.

You might have a blown fuse, but fuses don't burn.

Thanks ipod. Thanks for costing so much money and not only being a piece of shit, but now turning things you're connected to into pieces of shit.

I doubt you would smell a fuse unless there is a short that completely melted it. Either way there is a short. Hopefully not inside your deck. You need to take a look at your wiring and check for melted spots or components.

pull it out, check all the wiring. should have a fuse in the back of the head unit, check that, and the radio fuse in the fuse panel. report back with your findings.

thats what I was thinking! if you smell something burning, I'd be willing to bet its a wire shorting out. maybe your ground is loose?

Alright I'll keep you guys posted here. I haven't had a chance to check, but I will after school. Has this happened to anyone before, just wondering?

My hope is I just disconnected a wire or something when on went on the bump..hopefully that didn't ruin the deck..would it?

splice in new wire using crimp connectors. or electrical tape, depending on how you wanna go about it.
I think it's internal to your radio. do these head units have there own thermal fuses or what. Nuther question for you to explore. I think thermal protection fuses give off a smell when they go.

Wires don't just magically short themselves out. Something has to allow bare copper to touch metal. Also, I doubt you even have a short at all otherwise the fuse would blow and that would be it. It wouldn't be turning on and off. It wouldn't work at all. It would just shut off and stay off. Or, if your system was installed by an idiot and there is no fuse, it would just melt and you'd know it.

Considering this started while you were hitting bumps, I would conclude that you need to look harder. Some where in there you have something loose. This could be anywhere that connections were added or modified from factory. Check the adapters, the inline fuses if there is any, check if there are added wires going to the fuse box or battery. Check everything. Follow every wire from the deck back to where it connects to something else. Something is loose. The burning smell is a crappy connection arcing.

If nothing else....shine a flashlight and down in the little holes on the deck and see if you can find burn marks inside the deck. If the wiring is good, and the fuses are good...probably internal....Or borrow an old one from a friend and see if that one turns on.

I had the guy who wired it take a look, and he noticed the power was dissected. So he reconnected it still with no luck.

We took Took out the harness and the fuse was fine. Nothing was melted..he followed the power wife to the battery and it was good. The ground was fine too. All I need tocheck now is the fuses, but he doesn't think that's the problem. I'll do that anyway and report back.

Anyone know if I need to reset this or anything?

Your input has been great!
