Default Could really use some help/recommendations here...

Hello all, I'm a long time reader and first time poster!

Okay so I blew my stock speakers (either they're stock or the guy before me threw in some crappy Kenwoods), and I just realized how much I need a sub / subs. So, I am a complete newbie to this. I bought a JVC Arsenal KDA-615 for the head unit and installed it by myself (It doesn't scare me to do things like that, no big deal).

I listen to a lot of Metal (Death Metal, Hardcare, Metalcore, blah blah blah) and occasionally I'll throw in some Dubstep/Techno. I was wondering, what kind of setup would you guys recommend if I wish to keep at least one jumpseat in the back and have a budget of 4-500 dollars? I want something that will give the deep lows that Metal can produce, I'm not so much concerned about blowing my brains out as I am about having good lows and non-distorted sound (but it does need to be enough to shake the mirrors / feel the sound). I was thinking a 10 or 12" would be the right size, but I have no idea what I need for the amp and you guys are far more experienced and I would love to get your opinions.

*This thread is not intended for genre bashing... don't flame me for the music I listen to!*

EDIT... Might want to include my specs 03 Ranger Edge 2WD 3.0L V6 (Manual) Ext. Cab

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Well the Type-R seems to have gotten some great reveiws, do you think they'll still hit well if I pair it with an amp in the 5-600 watt range? I'm afraid 800 watts might blow the bank there...

Thanks!

If you do not want to blow the bank, check out the how-to section for the Infinity Basslink set-up, I ran that in my Ranger and my Civic. It had enough boom for me and I never cranked it up.

Step 1: DO NOT GO TO BEST BUY!!!

Check out a local small stereo shop.. about this time most are going to have sales and specials because for the most part the stereo season is over. I'd bet you could get a really nice setup and get it installed for that price.

Otherwise I recommend memphis or mtx. Now I may be biased as that is what i sell but dollar for dollar it is better then almost anything out there for everyday stuff. Competition is a different story.

ya i have a similar question about upgrading the door speakers and the rear speakers. i only have a 2 door so i don't have any room for a sub unless i buy one of those aftermarket skinny boxes and i am pretty sure that they wouldn't hit hard, i am not rich but im not going and getting cheep speakers so any suggestions would be cool

Believe me, I'm a computer nerd, I know best buy blows donkey pipe. They're all uneducated and the products are over priced. I'm really looking at this setup now: Alpine Type-R 12", 500W Alpine amp, and a custom build enclosure. That will only cost me ~300 total for all the parts, and I'm sure that 12"er will give me some good lows.

Listening to metal w/ deep low bass kicks (so like rap on steriods?) so I believe that should do the trick?

yeah, i listen to basically the same music, if i was you i would attempt to save up a few more bones for the bigger amp, but once agian that all on you, what you are suggesting is gunna be wild regardless. But the bigger amp would just make it that little bit better for sure.

ya a bigger amp means a bigger kick no doubt but i ran a 12" Sony xplode and a 12" pioneer with a 420w amp and people could here me from a block away so u shouldn't have any problems

Gotta watch it on the amps. I have seen some massive 1,200 watt pieces of shit that couldn't hold their own to a smaller size 500.1 JL for instance.

Watch the frequency range on the speakers for what you'll listen to, need to also watch the ohms. I want to run 1 ohm since I have a 1ohm stable amp, so I plan on getting a DVC 2ohm per coil and bridging it down in parallel to achieve this. My original set up was going to be a quad coil 4ohm per coil all hooked in parallel, but the box was too small and it didn't work out. The lower you can get the ohm load, the harder you can push the amplifier. But you need to make sure you stay within the amps stable specs whether it's hooked in mono or stereo. Box should be built depending on the manufacturer's cf specifications.

The Alpine Type R sub is an awesome sub, it doesnt require a lot of power as long as the box is built right. I ran a 12" (best for all types of bass even 808). I had a 1 12 in a pro-box built for a ranger that goes under the jump seat and also had an amp mount area (which is nice and takes the guess work out of trying to figure out where to put it) powered by a Alpine v12 250watt amp and it sounded incredible! As par as component speakers go, MB Quart was bought out by Rockford the merged into another company (forgot the name) but they still hold the same quality as they have always had. The most expensive part of the set up was the box, about $180, sub was used off of CL (craigslist), and the amp (free) came out of a used car at the dealership I used to work for, they should be a dime a dozen though....

Dude if you don't wanna go to the bank... Go to a pinata store like I did. lol

There's a store here in Peoria, AZ that sells Mexican party equiptment and also has a car audio section. So like Justin said, go to some little rinky dink, local store. You'll usually find the cheapest prices there.

But I still think you should go with 700+ watts.

This would prolly be the best set up, with the right box, you may not even need that big of an amp.
