Question How to remove radio in 90 Ranger

I purchased a new Pioneer CD / Radio from my brother-in-law on the cheap. I'd like to replace the Radio in my 90 ranger. It has an aftermarket tape/radio in it now. I imagine with the right touch it just slides out but I don't know how to do it. Looking for any advice. Also should the Pioneer just slide in it's place or is it not that easy? Thanks, Dave

I honestly don't have much experience with aftermarket head units. The one I just installed in my truck a few weeks ago was my first time changing one.

I thought all aftermarket head units came with their own removal tools. Does yours have a detachable or flip down face? With mine, you remove the face, then on either end off the unit there are slots to insert the tools, which are just thin pieces of metal. If yours is set up similarly and you can see the slots, you can use pretty much anything that will fit into those slots.

Here's a pic of the removal tools for my JVC.

Not sure if you need something like this but there should be slots or holes on either side....

I haven't even opened the Pioneer, I'll look for those tools. Yes mine that's in there now has a removable faceplate. How easy / hard was the installation of your new radio? Thanks for the feedback, Dave

Being my first attempt at swapping a HU, there were a couple little speed bumps. Nothing major, just took me a bit to figure out how to wire up the new harness. I got everything from Crutchfield, and they are known for providing detailed instructions, so that helped a lot. Now that I've done it and I have that experience under my belt, doing it again will be a breeze from now on.

If you don't have the proper tools to remove the old HU, just remove the two screws behind the ash tray that hold the front trim on (were the vents next to cluster and inset).

Then pull from the bottom working your way across the trim piece. The aftermarket HU should come out with the trim piece, or there might be a metal plate it is attached too.

Then just bend the tabs that hold the HU to the trim piece/metal plate back, remove, and in stall the new one.

I have had mine out of my 92 many times.

P.S. If you have any questions just ask.

Thanks, I will give that a try. I haven't tried yet, but I will do it before it gets cold. I'm trained as an electronics tech and used to do this stuff in my sleep, but I've had 3 back surgeries and 1 neck surgery all with fusions so it's a real pain to crawl under the dash and stuff. But I'm real tired of my old radio so it's time. Dave

Not a problem, if you were anywhere close to where I am I'd do it for ya.

Love this stuff.
