The bass doesn't have to drown out the rest of the music if you set it up right. Subs in sound quality builds don't produce overwhelming bass, rather a nice powerful low end to compliment the speakers. Really a sub is just a tool to produce the lo frequencies that your speakers can't and won't reproduce, however the loudness and accuracy of the sub is up to you.

RMS is rated power, and what should always be looked at. The RMS wattage is what the amp is actually putting out (if its CEA compliant) and what the speakers are actually rated. Max or peak power, which is typically what sells cheap junk amps and such, means nothing.

Subs don't drown out the music if you have a system that's quality and tuned and matched properly. If you go with ported subs and say, stock speakers, then yes it will probably sound bad. But for you, (from the way you talk) I would suggest a sealed 8 or 10 inch sub. Sealed keeps the quality and tone of the music and an 8 or 10 with a smaller amp wont make it loud. Subs really do add to the quality and depth of your music. Go to an audio shop and ask to see the salesmans car I'm sure you'll change your mind.

Crazy enough...they all have bass, and you can still hear the people talking clear as day!

There is only one speaker per door, and on each speaker (if two way) there is one woofer and one tweeter. Sure the woofer will vibrate the door a little but you won't be hearing any frequencies under about 60 or 65 with just speakers.
Also, do you know how to edit posts?...

I'm buying two 15" Kicker Solobaric L7s with a parted box and a 1600w Brutus amp for the Explorer soon. It's my friend's system and he just had to scrap his LeSabre due to the K member rotting away and nearly dumping the motor on the ground.
Everything was in his car for about 3 months before they destroyed his trunk latch. He took them out.
