The MOST IMPORTANT THING i have done for my sound system is soundproofing the interior.

I figure i have approximately 130 square feet (2 layers) of Ultimate B-Quiet (dampener) and about 25 square feet of Accoustic foam (absorber) in the cab of my Ranger.

All in all it involved about 13-15 hours of labour on my part and i spent about $500 in materials.

IT WAS WORTH EVERY SECOND AND CENT!!! trust me, if you can spend some time and money or get someone to do it for you, you'll thank me later.

Now that i explained how killed the noise, let me show how i make it!


When i built my system i decided to go all Alpine.

I have a basic CDE-121 headunit. connected to the 4 x 45w inline add on amp that is pushing four Type R 6x8's in the doors.

The bass will be provided by a MRV-M500 powering a 8" Type R running @ 500w rms @ 2 Ohms in a custom made ported box.



Right now for low end i'm running a last gen 12" type S in a sealed box on the same amp until i can get the box built for the 8".

Can you tell us why you are going with all Alpine components ? Those speakers are rated at 100 watts RMS per channel and that little add on headunit amp-amp will barely do 45 watts RMS x 4, if that. I know it is a class D design, but lots of experts doubt it will actually do the 45x4, with a 15 amp fuse.

Also what have you done about wind and blower motor noise? I know I will have to address it in my ranger, the side windows are real noisy on windy days and the blower motor is so loud it drives me nuts.

Gonna sell the 8" Type R & 12" Type S and go with something that will put out like the 12" and be the same size as the 8".

I bought a Sundown audio SA-8 D4 V2 Gonna put it in a ported box and tune it around 40 ish hertz on the same amp and set the x-over to about 85hz.

No particular reason to go all Alpine other than OCD uniformity as you can see with todays purchase i'm trying to beat it, LOL.

The add on amp won't hit the advertised spec's in real world conditions but the power bump from headunit levels without any extra wiring involved was a BIG selling point




The wind noise in the cab went down overall with the soundproofing the engine noise didn't bother me much to start with but the window noise is unavoidable unless there is a transparent/translucent sound dampener out there that i missed, and trust me i did some searching online to no avail.

I did not get any before and after spl measurements or take pictures during the process of installing the system.

I did the install while i was out at my parents place this winter they have a nice heated double garage they where nice enough to let me use for couple of days.

Sundown recommends a .5-.75 cu ft enclosure port-tuned to 35 hz or a .28 cu ft sealed enclosure. It would probably be OK in a .25 cu ft tightly sealed enclosure with 700 watts RMS IF it was properly lowpassed AND the subsonic filter engaged @ ~25 hz. In a ported enclosure, it will last alot longer given rated power and tuned correctly.
