The box doesn't have to be 8" at the top even, it could be as little as 4 or 5", just angle the front baffle.
There seems to be a lot of resentment on here from those with inferior equipment, or stuck in their ways without consideration for alternative, and usually superior conventions.
I feel it's unwarranted.

^ I had one of those Alpine amps running a 12" Type S dual 2 then switched to 8" Type R dual 4.
I really liked it, never let me down.

It wanged pretty good considering i was running it in a sealed box, it took the 150w over rated rms easily.
I wish i could have tried it in a ported box though.
