I don't know nearly as much about boxes as I I should but GLH is kind of our resident advisor. Well one of them at least. Actually I doubt he'll argue with you lol

No no! Never looking for an argument. Heated debate maybe, but no arguments.

And while im here- head unit in my 98 standard cab is a pioneer avh4300. Getting ready to put in a Mb quart 8" "for now" powered by a Rockford fosgate x7. 1000@4ohms. Blaupunk components (old school) in the doors. And if I have room I will buckle them up to a mtx 4ch.

This is true guys. I don't think GLH will argue. Why do you think Bose speakers sound so good? It sure isn't because of the crap ass speaker they use...

Bose OEM systems rely on low impedance, low power, and lots of EQ/processing. I hate Bose car audio factory systems. 7" paper subs and center speakers. Only way to get them to sound half decent is cut the bass, raise the mid, disconnect the center LMAO

JL & Alpine do a good job with their ported sub/box combos, but they are made for each other with exacting specs/parameters and near perfectly matched porting, usually around 35-40 hz. 6.5-8" subwoofers usually so alot more musical than 12-15".

Since I'm an audio noob, when you said "more musical", is that inferring that it has a less pronounced bass but has a cleaner/crisper sound?

It all depends on how you build your box, box placement. Eq, what kind of sub etc.... You can build so it blends in, or its a one note wonder. But......all things said. You can make a ported more so it blends, and usually with less power than sealed

More musical as plays a wider range of frequencies, whereas ported systems are tuned to a certain frequency and play loudest there.

Yes, a good sealed system requires more power (all other specs equal) to work by way of 'bass reflex'.

Today I pissed off some mom in my highschool parking lot after school because of my sub. It was a fun little argument and a proud moment for my little system.

How should it be mounted?, is it because the slots aren't vertical?

Must be mounted horizontal/flat for the heat sink to work properly & dissipate the heat.
