Yea my understanding was that it made the amp work too hard when it wasn't big enough for the subs. But thanks!

I'm picking up a Rockford Fosgate P3 Shallow 12" enclosure and Rockford Fosgate Punch amp in a few hours for the Ranger. A week ago however I was given two pretty beat up regular P3s for free. Anyone know of a place that refurbishes subwoofers?

Google audio places in your local area and call then and ask if they restore subwoofers.

You got a P3S? I was considering getting one soon, but I'm just not sure how it would compare to my tube. I would build a box for it, sealed because of the low cubes, but I don't know if a sealed shallow would be good for me. Definitely update on this.

It will get loud, with 400 watts RMS, just not very low. A JL regular depth 8" or 10" in a small sealed box will get lower and just as loud.

I can't do regular depth though. I took measurements for the max box size I could have behind my seat and it would be 10 inches deep at the bottom and 4 at the top, with a 12.5 inch height.

Would a 8" tube sound better than a shallow, and would there be much difference from my current 6"?

Have you looked at this site? http://www.supercrewsound.com/99RangerStdDual.html The model year range is actually 99-12.

I have an xlt regular cab and that box fit's very well. I have two swr-t10's and they're pretty ridiculous in that box.

My box is only like 5 to 6 inches at the base and three at the top. I had to take the passenger seat out to install everything and put it back in once it was wired. Try to find a P3S. This thing kicks.

Going to 8" tube from 6" would not be a huge difference. Going from a tube to a single 10" subwoofer huge all around difference. I was running two 6" tubes and I love my single 10" way more. I put a Memphis power reference 10" in a fairly small box and it hits way better than my tubes and seat loss is about the same but I did gain some rear storage back.

Why is it not good for subs to be underpowered? If that's a fact then we're all damaging our subs every time we turn the volume knob down lol

Cant stand how far from the truth it is for somone to say its bad for your subs to be under powered. You kind sir are absolutely correct about setting the amp correctly. The main problem with people using an amp with less rms output then what is needed to match the rms of the subwoofer drivers is that 90 percent of the general population does not know that every amplifier distorts at some point. Hence the point that people try to push more out of an amplifier than what it's rated to do which in turn will send a clipped signal to the subs and they will fail do to the distorted signal heating up the voice coils. Im guessing that's where the whole "underpowering subs will blow them" myth come from.

To make a long story short, I could run a 200 watt rms amplifier to each of my 1500 rms subwoofer drivers and as long as the system is set to be distortion free, my subs will never fail due to the lack of power. They will fall apart due to the soft parts eventually rotting over a number of years lol

I'm assuming he just means its bad because you aren't using the sub to its full potential.

I think what happens is that people underpower subs and say, well, i guess i can't blow it know matter how loud i turn it up now.

...then they clip and do.
