Hello, I am working on upgrading the sound system in my 97 ranger XLT. I have replaced the speakers, and they work just great. I have also replaced the stock radio.
So far I have
4 6X8 infinity speakers 60 watts RMS 180 Peak
1 Sony Xplod system 4 X 52 watts RMS

I want to put in subwoofers and an amplifier. I believe I have the ability to make my own boxes, if need be.

Here is what I don't know:
How much power will I want?
How should I match my amplifier with my Sub(s)?

I am looking to make a nice, loud system for $200-$250. I was thinking I would probably end up buying used amps and subs. So, other than making my subs and amp fit in my cab, what else should I look for?

How should I match my amplifier with my Sub(s)? if u got sony xplod subs get a sony xplod amp. that way you know they will work and wont have to mess with shit.

For a nice thump, a single 10" or 12" in a sealed box will do you well. Go for something around 400-600w RMS, and get an amp that matches the subs RMS wattage out put. Forget all about peak wattage, RMS is what really matters. You will probably have to build your own box to get the size needed by you sub. The sub should come with documentation stating the ideal box volume for ported and sealed, or you can look it up on Crutchfield.com. Sealed boxes require less air space, and so make more sense in our trucks. Also they produce a tighter cleaner sound, which really matter when you are sitting mere inches from the sub.

I currently run a 10" MTX Thunder 4500, Rated for 450RMS, pushed by a MTX TC2002 amp, bridged, rated at 425RMS. This combo works well together, with my home built sealed enclosure. I lost 2" of leg room in my standard cab, but achieved an almost perfect .98 cubic feet of airspace. I plan on stepping up to a 12" since my box is slightly bigger than I need for a 10".

Hey guys, I posted this back in june. I have a setup already. I chose a kicker comp cvt 10". 400 watts rms. I was planning on just letting the thread die.
