Hi--

I tried to DIY install a double din Pioneer unit today and I seem to have screwed up somewhere. The unit will not turn on, and I also tried plugging in the old stock unit and it will also not turn on.

I am a bit confused as to what could have gone wrong as the installation is pretty simple. I removed the old unit, used a radio wiring diagram to solder the wires together, and hooked everything back up (had to trim the bezel to make the unit fit).

The only potential thing I can think of is that I initially plugged the receiver wiring harness (Metra 70-1771) into the wiring that comes out of the vehicle just to make sure it fit and I had the right part. I had a hell of a time getting it back out and may have pulled one of the wires loose (?). I honestly have no idea if this is plausible or not it's just the only thing I can think of that would explain the old unit not working as well. Is there anyway I can test and see if this is the case? I am not particularly handy but can follow instructions.

It is too dark to take pictures now but I will post some tomorrow morning. I will also check the fuses though it seems hard to imagine that I would have blown the fuse while installing this.

Sounds like a blown fuse if the old one that was working isn't working now.

Given that the factory unit was working when it came out this morning, why would a fuse have blown today?

I turned the car off (didn't disconnect the battery FWIW), unplugged/removed the old unit, hooked up the new unit and turned the vehicle back on.

Agreed, especially if nothing comes on at all with the key forward in ACC.

Yr and model of truck would help us help you along some. But I am almost positive if you search through your owners manual and look under fuses, you'll find the radio fuse location and replace it you should be back in the running.

The radio has constant power going to it, since the battery was connected when you removed the radio, there's the possibility the wiring harness brushed against a metal part of the dash and blew the fuse.

Any time you plug any electrical device in with the power going to it, there's always the possibility of blowing a fuse or shorting something out, hence why it's "recommended" to kill the power before doing any electrical work.

Could be a blown fuse, also I've found out the hard way that the radio wiring diagrams are not always accurate for these trucks. It's better to go by pin location than color.

I replaced the fuse this morning and still no power to either the old radio or the new one. Any ideas? (I am again wondering if I could have been too rough with the wiring coming from the dash as I cannot figure out why the factory radio will no longer turn on.)

The dash plug is also able to be plugged directly into the factory stereo.

Undrst -- that does not appear to match my wiring instructions. Mine are similar to this

Tnoutdoors -- Can you elaborate on where the wiring could be incorrect? I am very much a beginner at this but given that the only soldering/connecting I did was for all new parts (the Metra 70-1771 and the item from the radio), I would hope that those weren't mislabeled or anything? And then I just plugged this into the part from the dash.

Your constant power should be light green colored and the switched should be yellow/black. The green should be farthest to the left with the yellow/black to the right of it if memory serves me right. Then of course make sure you have a good ground to the black wire.

Ok..

Lets stop guessing here. First off do you happen to have a test light? or at the very least an extra tail light bulb, two pieces of wire and a soldering iron to make one? You need to test both the Hot wire or Constant as people may refer it to for power as well as having the key turned forward and testing the ignition wire.

If both of those have power then my next question is.. Where did you run the black wire for ground? If memory serves me well. Ford had some audio setups that were grounded through a braided radio strap to the back of the original Stock radios. You would have to cut the ring off or Splice into it with the Ground wire in order to get a proper ground...

Outside of that, take a few shots of behind the radio in the cavity so we can see what you've done wiring wise so we can re access the situation better.

Hi -- so I bought a test light and just tested it. At least one of the circuits from the main "harness" (see pic below) lights up. On non-weekend days it's hard for me to test during daylight so I may need to go back and try to find the "constant" power and the power after the ignition. I also tested the fuse and it lit up.

As you can see, I had a wiring harness that plugged into the harness in the middle of the picture (end in red). I didn't ground anything, I just plugged it in (though my stereo and the connector piece had something it identified as a ground wire).

One potential thing I may have screwed up is that I disconnected the cigarette 12v lighter and didn't connect it to anything, just left it in the dash. I needed a place to put a microphone/USB cord inlet so I chose to use that space for those items. Could this potentially be an issue?

I'm realizing I probably got in over my head here, but I do enjoy learning about this stuff, appreciate all the help everyone.

Hi guys--

In case anyone is following this, I did resolve the issue today.

Feeling pretty dumb about this, but there are multiple fuses for the radio. I looked through a fuse diagram and stopped reading when I saw the first radio fuse (#20, 7.5amps on my 2001). I looked through it again today and realized that there are two additional fuses that also appear to hit the radio. A quick trip to buy a few more fuses, replaced them, and it's working just fine now.
