Exclamation Can figure out my wiring

Hey guys. I have a 2002 Ford Ranger I just bought a new head unit and tried to wire it I did not buy a wiring harness because I couldn't find one and so I am trying to wire it in directly and am stuck. There are a couple extra wires and the colors don't match up. I'll attach photos below so you can see. The picture of the three wires are the ones coming from the new head unit. If anyone would have any ideas would be greatly appreciated I am stuck.

Assuming you've gotten all of your speaker leads figured out, the only things left will be power and switched power. The blue wire from the radio is sending power out and can be used as the remote turn on for an amp. If you don't have one, just cap it. Use a test light or a multimeter to determine which of those wires from the truck has power all the time and hook it to the yellow wire from the radio. Then check for power only when the key is on and hook it to the red wire. Also, make sure the voltage doesn't change on either of those wires when you adjust the dash light dimmer knob. I'm sure someone will chime in with the wiring diagram for the truck side which could save you a little time.

I'm stuck in this situation also, which whites from the truck go to which colors on the new harness from Kenwood?

Dude, just put in your vehicle information into this site and it will give you everything you need for the wiring diagram of your truck.

http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/Wd

Then use the wiring diagram at the back of the Kenwood's manual to figure out what wire goes where. Heck the wires on the Kenwood are also probably labeled as to where they go (speaker, battery, ground, remote, etc).

The wires on almost all aftermarket head units will be the same colors. However the wire colors of all vehicles will be very different. Don't match vehicle wire color to aftermarket head unit wire color because it will never work.

The problem here is most people are terrified of wiring..

Anyway you go at it your going to have to spend a few dollars and get a factory harness to aftermarket harness. That makes 90% of your work easy if NOT done. Its wire for wire and color for color with exception of the odd instance yellow is wrong in some off brand, [Meaning they use the Yellow for "hot" or "Battery" lead instead of an ignition lead].

As Soledad mentioned, nearly all aftermarket radio wiring is exactly the same.. The other 10% of your equation here is your attitude towards a clean install or time investment into doing it right. Many get impatient and just wrap a wad of tape around a bigger rats nest of wiring and stuff it in behind the radio and call it done.

If you need to, get close & clear enough pics of whats in the dash, whats behind the head unit and we could easily get creative with mapping out your wiring woes..

a) without a signature describing what you are working on, any info people will give will be a guess.

b) provided that the only wiring you touched in the course of wiring up a new deck was the OEM stereo connector wiring, then you *probably* (see below) didn't wire anything in a way that could cause the current condition

c) if other people have been hacking the wiring under your dash and it's been screwed with, then who knows what's going on, but...

d) you probably need to trace the starter circuit. The schematics for whatever you're driving can be had over on bbbind.com; they will cover all systems on your vehicle. Pull them up, get out the flashlight and a dmm, and trace wiring and if someone has tampered, focus on that first.

*Schematics on bbbind.com

Edit: starter won't operate unless the clutch is depressed, there will be a switch. Focus on the wiring upstream from that safety switch, not downstream (ie, from switch to starter) as right now that looks to be working ok.

on b) above, I injected the *probably* because on my 04 Ranger, there is a wire that is claimed to be "hot in start" (pin #3 on the deck connector, a RD/BK wire). If somehow you have a "hot in start" wire for the OEM deck and tried to use it to power your deck, then it I suppose it might be possible to backfeed power into that circuit from your deck and do something strange with the starter (I would have to look at the schematics, but I'm not going to because, there is absolutely no need to use that wire. If you did attempt to grab power from a "hot in start wire", then that is the first thing to undo.)

No idea what that function does as far as the OEM setup goes or why you hooked it up (I have no idea what you are driving, you really need to create a signature describing your vehicle as it helps people to better help you). I would strongly encourage you to visit the site I suggested and look at the schematics (they are OEM Ford) to make sure everything is correct (speaker polarity, etc). For power, you need the hot in run/acc, hot at all times, ground, and you will want the panel lighting wire (variable voltage, thus dimming).

Glad it's working out, just keep going!
