You can't overload the headunit.

If i had to guess you're lucky if the headunit puts out around 10-15 real watts of RMS power, the factory speakers would be similary rated to handle that power.

Any low end aftermarket speaker will make a difference but you'd be cheating yourself with factory headunit power using speakers that where rated for anymore than 30-40w rms

yea i figured but im not changing the head unit yet, i wanna get a good one and i dont have the money so i was going to change the speakers first but if its that low ill just wait. thanks for the info. i dont understand why ur all saying that u cant overload a head unit... sorry if thats not the right word for you but if i use speakers that are 100 watts ull hear nothing but static. and your going to tell me thats ok? and that its not (overloading) the head unit?anyone who says i can use higher watt speakers is an idiot itll never sound right if i did that.

You can use 100w speakers on a factory HU with ZERO issue's and still get decent sound out of them, they just won't reach their full potential.

They will just be underdriven and will not "overload" anything.

Just don't crank any settings up to compensate for the lack of power and you'll be fine.

Don't have to upgrade it all at once, get some decent replacements for the factory speakers then when you can afford to give them more power with an aftermarket HU or even better an outboard (seperate) amplifier.

I have been doing this for years myself, and i'm not an idiot.

my speakers are 180 watts and they're crystal clear.
******* thats the rating for what they can handle.

That's max wattage, everyone knows that Rms is real rating that matters.

I was using it as an example. Having higher rated speakers are not going to make it staticky is what I'm getting at.

You can put speakers rated for 90 watts in and ruin them with your factory head unit. If you push the head unit, it will begin to clip. When it clips, the speakers will eventually be ruined.

If you want loud with your head unit, you need to pay attention to a speaker's sensitivity rating. The higher the rating the better, though pay attention to whether its @1 watt vs @2.83 volts/1 meter (make sure youre comparing the same units).

With speakers that have a 92+db sensitivity rating, you are getting the most out of what limited power you have available. The wattage rating of a speaker is its power handling capacity- that is the number of watts it can handle without overheating. That specification will only really become important when you put an amplifier in the truck to give the speakers more power. At that point, you would want to set the amplifiers gains to accommodate what power the speaker is rated to handle.

It gets even more complicated- a speaker generates lower frequencies by traveling longer distances (more throw), which requires more power. One of the best things you can do to get better performance from a speaker is to take the burden of low frequencies off it by installing a subwoofer. The subwoofer has a bigger cone and more easily generates low frequencies, and this frees your mids to play frequencies above whatever you set as you high-pass frequency.

You need to not get upset when it comes to the responses you get. First, people will jump your ass for it. Second, audio is massively complicated to the point that eventually it gets theoretical- people tend to be very literal in their responses for a reason: clarity.
