Default subwoofer amp questions

one of my good friends just gave me their subs for free because he got a new system, i've never had a system so im a little confused on what all i need. all i have as of right now is 2 10in MTX thunder 6000s and a box, the subs are rated for 500 watts each and 4-ohms. i would like to get them in my rig before spring but i am real confused on exactly what parts i need to get them going. i know i need a amp, wiring kit and id like a bass knob, but what exact amp ( how many watt+channel ) and wiring kit do i need for these specific subs?

thanks, steve

You need a mono amp that will output 1000 watts RMS @ 2 ohms, if they are both single voice coil 4 ohm. Is the box ported ?

Yes, a mono amp is made for a sub system. With sealed, you don't need a subsonic filter on the amp, but if the amp has one, you can set it at 25-30 hz for efficiency. You need a good headunit with sub RCA preouts and sub control with a lowpass filter. The amp will also have a filter, but the filter in the head will be more precise and you can just turn the amp filter on the highest setting. 80 hz lowpass for the sub and 125 hz highpass for the door speakers is usually best for the Rangers. You can probably get by with 4 gauge power and ground wire with a 1000 watts RMS amp if the wire is OFC.

FYI, the 500w rating is the MAXIMUM rating (so ignore that), those subs are only rated 250W RMS each, so a 1000w amp would be overkill, not that it wouldn't work but a 500-750w amp would probably be cheaper and less likely to blow your subs.

Correct, then. If each sub is 250 watts RMS and SVC, you need an amp that outputs 500 watts RMS @ 2 ohms. 4 gauge power and ground wire.

Also just because the amp says 1000 watts doesn't mean that what its gonna put out unless it is a really good amp. Plus if you have a 1000w @ 1ohm it would be some where around 700w @ 2ohm

Depends on the circuitry of each amp. They are all different. Not a given. He simply needs to look for an amp that outputs close to 500 watts rms @ 2 ohms. Up to him if he wants a 1 ohm stable amp, for future upgrades, maybe, for example.

My sub is rated for 600w but it thumps pretty nice with my 300w pioneer amp!
