Default Recommended Radio?

I'm looking into a different aftermarket radio in my 94, and was wondering what systems or brands everyone recommends?

Pioneer is arguably making the best head units right now. Depends on how much you want to spend. Are you going for single din or double din?

Edit: I guess since its a 94, probably a single din.

I just got a JVC kdr-760 from crutchfield. I love the thing. My favorite feature is the variable color display. Second would be the USB input. I put a bunch of music files on a small 8gb flash drive and just hit shuffle on the radio. Only 90 dollars from crutchfield.

I have had many Pioneer decks over the years. However, I just installed Kenwood in both my cars and I LOVE them so much more than the pioneers. Not saying pioneer is bad, but it seemed the file/song name reading worked better and I like the display a lot on the most recent Kenwood which is whats in my Ranger. Its a Kenwood x498. Its got the variable color display, usb and aux inputs. I bought a very tiny usb drive and its so small I never need to take it out when I take off the face.

Yeah, I'd put Kenwood at close second to Pioneer in terms of head units. Reason I say that is pioneer is hands down making the best double-dins right now and they offer the best higher end sound quality decks on the market like the deh-80prs.
But the x498 is a solid deck for the money and has good ratings.

10-4 on the PRS line. Absolutely no clipping or distortion from the RCA outputs at 100% volume. More adjustibility than anyone could ever want. Totally 3-way capable with parameters for tweeter, midrange, and sub. Highpass, lowpass, and bandpass settings. Would be ideal for midbass and tweeters in front doors, midrange in rear doors, and a sub system.

+1 for the Kenwood x498. I chose it for the HD FM radio, which was a surprise to find on such an inexpensive unit. The factory 6x8s sound infinitely better now (which only makes me want to upgrade them, too.:~) I like that USB MP3 playback resumes exactly where it stopped when the ignition is turned off. The variable color display let me match the Ranger's green dash lighting almost perfectly.

I was impressed by the budget lineup of Kenwood/JVC (owned by the same firm). JVC had FLAC playback in a budget receiver, whereas Kenwood offered HD radio. Either unit was only $35 more than their lowest end models.

Even if you buy elsewhere, Crutchfield has useful tips on adapters and the like. They usually offer a full installation kit free or discounted with purchase of a receiver, plus knowledgeable phone support. Good luck.
