System questions?
Have a 1996 ford ranger xlt with a stock system I was wondering if I put 2way kickers in the back and 4 way pioneers would it sound good? Should I get a new headunit? If so what's a decent cheap headunit?

All you want is speakers and a base unit Pioneer head ? You arent planning to otherwise amp the speakers ? Go to walmart and get 2 pair of Pioneer coaxials and the cheapest Pioneer single size headunit they have. They should also have the mounting kit and wiring adaptors. The speaker wiring in your truck is small and old and low quality. Run new 16 gauge speaker wire feom the new headunit to each new speaker. Kicker speakers require more power than a headunit to sound as they should. The Pioneers are more sensitive and will make better efficiency of the low power from only the headunit.

They will have decent bass off the headunit. But if you want bass get a sub. They will have a little more with 4 channel amp because they will get more power. But they won't put out bass like a sub.

Big 10-4. Pioneer coaxials are known for their mid-bass response with headunit-only (14-22 watts RMS each) power.

Yes. My pioneers sounded good. I still have them. But I have 4 kicker ds68 in the truck hooked up to a 4 channel now and they sound a lot better. Off the headunit the pioneers sounded better then the kickers do. But off the amp I'm happy with the kickers.

Yep, Kicker speakers definitely need power to sound OK. Their subs however suck regardless, in my opinion.

Re: System questions?
Yeah, when WallyWorld started selling Kicker you kinda knew the quality was gonna suffer.

Pioneer is good gear. They have always sold Pioneer. Maybe they mostly sell the less expensive Pioneer gear, but its the same Pioneer you can buy at Crutchfield or anywhere.

Re: System questions?
Hi this is my first post here, but the kicker speakers rock! I've got the kicker ks 6x8 speakers and they sound good. For what I use them for, I m not using an amp for them. I think there 52 rms and my head unit is 50 rms. great sounding speakers!

I have read my good reviews of the kickers. I've read that they love to be powered by an amp but I'm glad you say they sound good without an amp because I don't want to spend more $ on another amp.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Your headunit does not put out 50 watts. Depending on the brand, probably 14 - 22 watts rms.

They will sound alot better with rated power. They arent really sensitive enough for low power applications.
