Default Head unit just died

While driving the other day, my head unit lost all power. It happened before but would come back on after a few seconds or so. When it did it this time, i have nothing. I pulled the radio and checked the harness plugs, the 15amp fuse on the harness and the 7.5amp fuse on the side of the dash. Im no expert on this but I wanted to ask any of you if you knew anything I could check or have an idea. I have a clarion head unit in. I was using my aux plug listening to my iPhone if that helps. Thanks guys!!

Have you tried other sources ? Did you check the fuse on back of the headunit ? Check the yellow power wire connections from headunit to battery ? Check grounds ?

What other sources? The only wires i checked were the ones in the adapter harness. There is a 15amp fuse in on of the wires, is that the same one you are referring to?

Sources as in CD, FM, etc. You said you were listening to iPhone on aux. Aux is a source and so is USB.

Well you should check continuity on both power wires. Isnt there a fuse in the back of the unit ? What model is it ?

Its a Clarion CZ100. I did see a fuse on one of the wires from the harness. I'll pull check to see if there is another fuse. I want a different head unit at some point but i want to make sure its not a wiring issue before i put another one in there and it be the same. Thanks for your help btw.

I have that same head unit in my ranger. All you need to do to verify if it's wiring or the head unit is check for power and ground.

If you don't have one, get a cheap multimeter(can be found at parts stores for under $10). Pull the deck, unplug the harness from it. Check for voltage at the pin with the red wire, and the pin with the yellow wire. Do this with the key in the run position. They should both have power, and your unit needs both to turn on. Then you can check for continuity to ground on the pin with the black wire.

(edit: there is a fuse on the deck, you will see it when you remove the harness from the back. Check that fuse before you start checking for power.)

If all three of these wires (and the fuse) do what they are supposed to, start looking for a new head unit.

I had this happen to my head unit a couple times before i switched it try hiting the reset button, mine was under the face after you popped it off and that usually did the trick for me.

You should have power on both the red and the yellow wire when the truck is on and still have power on the yellow when the truck is off. Make sure you have a good ground on the black wire when the harness is disconnected from the radio, too. Testing the ground with the radio connected can give you false readings.

The 15amp glass fuse was bad on the harness. It looked good but when I pulled it the end came off. I put in a new fuse and all is good now.
