Hello, I'm installing Rear Speakers in my 2002 Ford Ranger that has speaker openings / grilles in the rear cab. Wiring for rear speakers is in harness at connector head unit but my problem is that I do not see any speaker leads in the area in the back of the cab when I pull out / remove the speaker grilles (to install new speakers). I have read in earlier forums that the connection is under the driver seat. I have not been able to locate rear speaker wiring in my 2002. Anyone have an idea where to look next?

If it is an XL reg cab, there probably arent any. You can have better speaker wire than stock anyway by running new 16 gauge wire from the headunit to each speaker. What headunit and speakers are you using ?

^^ Yep my 98 XL ext cab didn't have speakers or wiring, I just ran my own.

GLH, thanks for the reply. I find most call the 2002 Ranger a SuperCab. Saw in forum where back in 2011 a subscriber had same issue as mine, finding the wire under the driver seat. I did find some wires routing under the seat going back to under panel where a speaker will be, but wasn't the right color codes.

If it has the 2 suicide rear doors, it is a Supercab, otherwise it is an extended cab or a regular cab.

OH, thanks, it is ext cab.
Tomorrow I will dig around some more under seat, if wiring for rear speakers are not found I'll use option 2 - splice in on harness near head unit.

Did it. Wired form head unit to new rear speakers. Wasn't bad once I decided that was the best solution. It was a nice surprise to find a secret compartment that made the routing of wire much easier.

Cool. How does it sound and do you have the same speakers in front ?

Still OEM speakers in front. Sounds good over all, but not spectacular. Had sound distortion at around mid volume. Turned sound up and went away. Still checking.

If you have a highpass filter in the headunit, enable that. Also, you need the best speakers in front. An aftermarket headunit is sometimes too much for the stock speakers. Dont use loudness, bass boost, or preset EQ. Highpass your door speakers at 80 - 125 hz and use custom EQ. Remember, your door speakers arent made for bass.

Secret compartment?
I have an XL standard cab, does mine have this secret compartment, if so where?

There are grills behind the seats along the rear of the cab, just took the grill off to check out, there isn't even a frame for speakers and no wiring, just the line going to the third brake light.

I haven't looked into anything, yet, what will I need to install speakers, and what is the best path for running wiring?

My truck just flipped 175,000 so I'm not sure how far I want to go. My wife drives it to work daily, maybe better than stock tunes will help her like the truck better.

Obviously I'm not an audiophile and it's been a long time since I swapped out a stock system, usually stock is fine but this truck is an XL without all the features, head unit is am/fm only, no CD player so I've been wanting to upgrade.

Year model ? All you need is a new Pioneer headunit and 2 new Pioneer coaxials in the front doors. There is no need for speakers behind the seats.

Were you asking me? It's in my signature ~ 2003' XL 7' bed stock everything except for the rims and those are barely an upgrade from stock.

I just thought since there's grills back there might as well fill them. But like I said, neither my wife or I need an expensive system - hell we've owned the truck for 3+ years and I didn't notice until recently that there wasn't sound coming out of those rear grills! So if a new headunit and a decent set of coaxial speakers for the doors will do the trick, that sounds good to me.

I've purchased from Crutchfield in the past, in your experience is that a good place? I'm mostly thinking of them because they have the installation kits for their stereos.

Yes, Crutchfield is still great and will also include tech sheets and speaker wire harness adaptors. Alot of people use Infinity Reference coaxials because of their high sensitivity and low impedance. Makes the most out of low headunit-only power. Pioneer has some very good coaxials with sensitivity of 90 or 91 I believe. As long as you don't get speakers like Polk or Alpine or Focal that need alot of power to sound good, you will be fine.
