Sub setup recommendations please!

Hey guys first post sorry if this question gets asked a lot, but any feedback much appreciated! Just got myself an 02 ranger edge supercab, and first thing I need to do is upgrade the audio stuff, head unit and subs.
Looking for recommendations on sub brands and sizes that work for you guys. Money limit 400 tops. Need the bass for hip-hop and metal. (currently thinking a slim 10") And sub positioning ideas would be awesome too! (under driver seat, passenger, back)

My advice, look into installing some butyl sound dampener/foam absorber in the cab of your truck before upgrading stereo components.

It takes approximately 60-70 sq. ft. to do one layer of 100% coverage in an extended cab and the results are well worth it.

100% coverage isn't really nessessary (i did 200% with 2 layers) i'm sure positive results can be had from even 25-30% coverage.

For the cost to benefit ratio, soundproofing is now the first thing i will always reccomend to someone looking to start upgrading audio gear.

^I agree, dynamat or secondskin is great stuff, but a bit over your budget, it'll cost $400+ for the dampener itself, I just put some dynamat on the doors, which is good enough for me atm.

You need a decent amp, sub, sub box, and wiring, but everyone has different taste. $400 will get you some decent equipment, but whatever you do, don't buy cheap equipment, or walmart stuff, usually isn't the best.

Here's a website that teaches you the fundamentals if you never installed an audio system before. Since you never said 'amp' so I'm guessing you may not be familiar with installing.

As far as sub, maybe this- MB Quart DWH 254

Also, you won't be able to fit a slim sub under any seat without modification, the amp and sub/subbox will have to be in the back.

I used to have a pioneer 12 flat sub in my truck. It wasn't bad. I am currently running an alpine type r 8 dvc 4 ohm wired to 2 ohm on an alpine 250 rms amp and love it! Right now crutchfield has a sale going on for New Years so now is the time to buy. You can get the alpine Mrv f300 4 channel and the Mrv 500 mono for $120 a piece and the sub I bought of techronice.com for $100. I know it's a little bit of money but good stuff. A lot of guys run the alpine amps. I bought a powerbass 4 channel but I'm not gonna use it. I'm gonna buy the alpine, my entire system is alpine except speakers. Check our crutchfield they have there sale going on. All your speakers are 6x8 and for headunit I highly recommend a pioneer double din! Which they also have sale on those too!

I have the kicker door speakers and I got mine from Walmart, no issue with them. The stuff at Walmart is the same stuff you would buy from crutchfield or any other well known place. They just aren't the higher quality models. My kickers aren't bad speakers at all. I haven't amped them yet but will be. Might change my fronts out for a pair of hertz speakers though.

My truck has a rockford kit. But gonna be switching it out for some monster wires that I have.

Yea, but the sad thing about walmart is that they have trash mixed in, I saw a sub with NO brand name on it, just be wary.

Awesome guys thanks so much... got some ideas I'm toying around with now. Didn't even think about sound damping foam. That would make for a cleaner setup. Probably won't be doing the system myself, I have a local audio shop I like. (but it could be fun to try)

Just make sure if you go to a shop it's a reputable shop. My local shop is a bunch if hacks, they half ass everything they do. I would never bring my truck to the local shop. (I'm not talking bad about car audio shops just saying to make sure they are good first because there are places out there that will half ass anything they can)

$400 for head unit, amp, sub, box, parts, labor? That is a little slim... depending on your goals I guess. Steer clear of slim subs. Can't stand them. Would much rather use a 6" or 8" regular sub than a slim 10" any day. Look outside the box for your amp/sub. Main stream companies like Pioneeer, Fosgate, Kicker, etc. have fallen behind. There are several lesser known brands today like Digital Designs, Addictive Audio and Sundown that can provide superior products/performance for less investment. For the head unit however, stay inside the box. Your main stream companies like Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer, JVC, etc. are the way to go when it comes to head units. There are several "off brands" today offering lots of bells and whistles for little money but they are mostly junk. Pioneer has a big following online so you'll see a lot of support for them on this forum but look at multiple brands before deciding. If you have a local shop you are comfortable with and trust, they should be able to help you figure out a head unit that will provide the features and perfomance you need/want.

If your gonna invest in sound dampening material go on amazon and get GTmat. Its the same exact stuff as dynamat just without the name brand printed on it and a lot cheaper. For sub placement in an extended cab if you have the tools I would build a custom box and put it against the back wall between the two small seats. If you want an example go on my profile and look through my photos. For subs I would look into polk audio or infinity they both make an amazing 10 inch sub that is plenty loud but doesnt require a lot of cubic feet for box size. I have a polk audio mobile monitor series sub in my truck and my brother has an infinity and they both sound amazing. They both push about 250 -300 watts rms and thats a perfect level for a cab that size, not over powering loud but still enough to make your mirrors and your seat shake a little when you want

Dynamat is over priced but you need to be cautious with GTMat. They offer many products made of many materials and they use less aluminum than other brands out there. Some of their products are asphalt based which will stink. Stay away from that. Pricing looks pretty good but be careful what product you buy.

I have a Rockford t1 12 with 4 gauge wiring. And it so loud in my truck. I recommend that. Plus I have factory box from Rockford an it fits
