Just looking for some advice...
So I haven't been on for quite a while, and I now just bought a different Ranger. ('99 4.0 Xlt Supercab 4x4 -slower, but sexier) I guess I need to change my signature.. Anyhow I just finished rebuilding the top of the motor, and the first non-necessary thing that "needs" fixing that I've noticed is the driver side front speaker doesn't work. I had already bought a new double din radio for its mp3 cd, usb, and sim card ports, (Boss 822UA) so hopefully if I have time tomorrow I will be putting it in and trying to sort out the speaker problem. What I'm looking for is any tips I might need to know on what to do and what not to do, and if I might need anything else.. I know almost nothing about car audio systems so that's why I'm asking. If the speaker is bad then what speaker is a good deal for quality sound? (not crazy loud or crazy price, just normal speakers) Also if its bad should I replace all four or just the front pair? What about the amp? Like I said I know almost nothing, but I do know a good deal about professional event sound systems as I do some work for a local sound system rental company when I'm free; so I do have a general idea of how sound systems work haha. (though from talking to friends they don't have too much in common.. to me a good amp is a jvc or qsc and a good board is a yamaha, "kenwood" is foreign to me haha)
I like the mechanics side of things and taking my beauty offroad, so I'm just hoping not to get bogged down with wiring work when I could be mapping out my custom bumper design (no sagging yet, but I still hate those big hunks of tin foil and plastic)

Re: Just looking for some advice...
Run new 16 gauge speaker wire from the headunit to each speaker. Now, why did you buy a Boss ?

Said it himself. "I know almost nothing". Lol
You need to figure out a budget first. Jumping in to amp & speakers & proper setup can be spendy
You can get away with some Infinity reference series running off the deck and they sound pretty good amplified too. Now if you're going to get an amp and speakers, then you've smacked a hornets nest. Tons of good stuff. Tons of options. Even more opinions. I suggest you listen to GLH. He knows what's up.
I'm a fan of Hertz speakers, Alpine amps, and Kenwood Excelon decks. Among others. But that's just me
If you want the cats pajamas though... look at Audison!

Re: Just looking for some advice...
I also like Kenwood Excelon headunits, but not regular Kenwood. I like Pioneer headunits best. I have always heard that Hertz speakers are kinda like Polk, will only perform well with rated power. Alpine amps are the bees knees, but I also like MTX and Kicker amps (do not like Kicker subs or speakers).

x2 on all this, went from a fully loaded pioneer single din to a ken wood ddx 319 (excelon series) and loved them both just wished the model I have had blu tooth. And currently I'm running an alpine mrp-500 mono amp for my subs and love it as well

It could just be a blown speaker. If that's the case just replace the blown speaker and it's other half of the pair. If you aren't looking for anything too crazy, coaxial speakers are the way to go. They are full range, inexpensive, and simple. You can test the speaker that isn't working to see if it is blown by putting a multimeter on the terminal (positive to positive and negative to negative) and read the impedance or ohms. Depending on the speaker that's in there it should be around 4 or 8ohms. If it is way higher, way lower, and bouncing all over the place, the speaker is blown.
The front door speakers should be 6x8's. Some 5x7's can also be installed in a factory 6x8 hole because they either have a large mounting flange or they come with an adapter plate. Or you could upgrade a bit to a 6x9 which could require some minor cutting.
Here are a couple options for you:
MTX 6x8 - http://www.mtx.com/_mtx+mobile+6+x8+...l&utm_camp=TDX
MTX 6x9 - http://www.mtx.com/_mtx+mobile+6+x+9...l&utm_camp=TDX
You can test to see if it is a pinched speaker wire or a head unit problem by taking the passenger side door speaker out and installing it in the driver's side. If it works, it's definitely a speaker issue and your head unit and wiring are fine.
Hope this helps.

Re: Just looking for some advice...
Don't cut up your truck for 6x9's. What's the point ?

It's just a little trimming and some trucks don't even need to cut to fit a 6x9 but I agree, I would not cut my truck just to go from 6x8 to 6x9.
