if you whant to keep it five speed i would use a five speed out of an 99 f150 with a 4.2 v6 you will have to drill out the bellhousing bolt holes but its not hard thats the trans in my 92 it your 4x4 push buton or shifter on the floor you can also use the tranfer case out of an f150 but will have to have costom drive shafts made the 7.5 rear is ok ive blown up two of them but they can hold up if you dont push them to hard they dont like drag slicks i can tell you that but i would upgrade to the explorer 8.8 l/s if you going to be rough on it

you might still need a tranfer case i dont think the ranger one will fit the explorer trans and most explorer v8 are awd and that wont do you any good

If you're worried about mpg and a 5.0.... You're not ready to swap it.

Yes, you need at least a 28 spline 8.8..... I would highly recommend the 8.8 31 spline in that expo as well.

No, your gears are reverse cut, the ones in the D35 are not.

you will need to upgrade to a stronger spring to handle the weight of the 5.0. they are great strong motors and if you baby them you can get atleast 20mpg on the freeway a stock 5.0 only has about at most 225hp and about 250 to 300ftlbs of tq. thats at the crank shaft Foed doesnt like to dyno run motors at the tires take about 10 to 15% off the those power numbers and that will give you about the correct power. now for gears and axles you might as well run run the expos front and rear axle just to be the safe side. but you should be fine with the trans and xcase

What tranny do you have now? Do you want a manual or automatic 5.0? Personally, I'd do what the other member on here said and take a 5spd off a f150 and drill out the bell housing holes to mount to the 5.0 and then run manual shift f150 case. Might take a lil customizing to get it all in and working, but if you're going to be swapping in 5.0, you're gonna have to custom quite a few things as is.

Now for front axle, I would say you probably could leave yours alone, and maybe upgrade shafts to a stronger shaft since you don't use 4wd as much, and get some manual locking hubs. For the rear, I already told you, I would recommend the Expo 31 spline 8.8 with matching gears to what you have now, if not maybe upgrade to the next ratio up.

i want the power but i dont want it to cost me a arm and a leg. even thought i no its going to. i just hate my 3.0 now i would even settle for a 4.0 with 4.56 gearing every one loves there 4.0's i want the more power with out dropping $1,000,000 in to a 3.0. im not going to get rid of my truck.
