After changing the rear left tire a few days ago, I have been trying to find out more information on the proper way to use the stock bottle jack that came with my 2008. My 2005 Edge had the same jack and it didn't have enough length to be any help either. I've always had to find a brick or 2x4 to give the jack more lift.
The manual swears it should sufficiently lift the truck enough to change a tire on its own but at full extension I barely even managed to reach the sweet spot, let alone lift it enough for the spare. Am I missing something or should I invest in a new jack?

where do you place the jack? there are specific jack areas were supposed to use (jack hooks)

In the manual it specifies on the front there are jack hooks. I have changed a front tire on the 05 and it had them, so I assume the 08 has them as well. Even then I still needed some extra height from a brick.
On the rear there is not a hook, but a 'sweet spot' between the axle and the wheel what is diagrammed in the manual. In practice the jack was too short to work on its own, and using a brick is of course dangerous. I don't even have the larger tires yet and even now this jack is good for just that... Jack.

Never had a problem with the jack on either truck or my girlfriend's Explorer Sport. Are you sure you have the correct jack?

As I said the jack was the exact same on both trucks, and it must be the correct jack because it does fit snug in the jack compartment behind the passenger seat. The jack also fits the picture shown in the manual. I find it very queer that I seem to be the only one having this problem, especially since I had the same issue with two different trucks that had the same stock jack.

I've always been able to use my jack, even with 32" tires, but it is a telescoping jack with two rods inside each other. maybe one of yours is seized?

That could be my problem. I will wind her up when I can and see if both deploy. I know for a fact the old rangers jack was seized because I remember it was pretty jacked up and wasn't smooth.

I just wound her up, yeah the second piece is seized. At least now I know it's intended to be a telescope jack. Thanks a lot, looks like I'm in the market for a jack now.
